What does 3w83 mean?

It's a snip from the Jag EPC, which I think you can download from the stickies. Jag classic parts has it on-line now as well though so try here: https://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk

It's the first four digits in the manufacturer's (Visteon) part number. Here's the label on my 2005 XK8 Instrument Pack 3W83-10849-AG:
To check module compatability you need to refer to the VCATS label on your vehicle behind the liner in the luggage compartment. This is from my 2000 X308:
Once you have the module information, have a look at the TSB on compatibility and interchangeability:
TSB 418-03 Module Compatibility.pdf
There may be a later version of the TSB.

Many thanks for the information and links, Chris and Graham. Graham - was the instrument pack from a coupe or convertible, and did your model have adaptive cruise control? According to Eurojag, most of the later models did have acc. the module in question has the same ID as your (and mine), though ending with the letters DG. My original one ended with the letters DF - the chap I spoke to at Eurojag says that these letters represent time, with the G meaning it is slightly later.
Incidentally, no VCATs label anywhere to be seen! I have stripped all the carpeting from the boot/trunk, and there are no labels behind it, despite a careful examination; I have not looked behind the rigid plastic moulding along the back. I don't suppose it would have been placed somewhere else?

I thought the VCATS compatibility was no longer an issue on the 4.2L cars?
In any case 3W83-10849-DF = C2N2456
C2N2456 has been replaced by C2N3091 https://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/part/C2N2456
C2N3091 = 3W83-10849-DG
So either version will work, BUT it will need to be programmed to the car using WDS, IDS or SDD...
Just FYI, 3W83 is a designation of model and model year, in other words it's for an X103 XK8 or XKR.
The middle digits 10849 are for an instrument cluster.
The 2nd last letter is a feature type, the last letter is a revision.
