Is this a bad thing or just loose engine mount/transmission mount bolts? What are the typical risks?

Me and the 31 others who have viewed this post so far must all be thinking the same - what do you mean by "creaking".

When moving from D to P or from P to R, you'll have the footbrake applied?

Is it thumping into gear / creaking from slight movement of the pads against the discs as the vehicle moves slightly forwards or backwards / movement of the engine or transmission units from failed mounts...........?

I creak when I'm having a 'P'!!!........
Seriously...... My 2000 XK8 'creaks' when I put the car into D or R.
It feels as if the car wants to move (my foot is on the brake) and the 'creak' seems to come from under the car somewhere, not the engine area.
It's done it ever since I got the car over a year ago.
The creak isn't particularly loud, and I just ignore it.
It's part of my cars character!
Maybe a few people here will throw their arms up in horror, and tell me it's a genuine fault, but it hasn't ever seemed to make any difference.
Roy.

creaking isn't that hard to imagine, uh say pirate ship on the ocean? The car slightly lurches, I'll have to get some visual confirmation of forward or backward for the scientists here.

uh DUH, who shifts while moving into park or DRIVE or REVERSE, etc. of course it's stopped and my foot is on the brake.

Thanks to Roy for useful feedback I won't worry about it then.

Mine is a 2003 XK8 and it creaks too when going from P to R or P to D. Has done that since I got it 3 years ago.

I have a 2002 XKR that had 34k miles on it when I bought it and it has always "creaked" when shifting out of P and into D or R. I just figured it's a Jaguar and it can't wait to get out and run!

Wife had the same complaint. I told her its not an American car it shifts so smoothly its telling you its in gear. For the brothers across the pond we feel the heavy
Chevy's and Fords go into gear. I wish i would have said something different may be i would have had the chance to enjoy the Jag other than Friday honey do days. Ha Jim

Arrrgh.... it could be mounts/fasteners but usually it's an indication of u-joints or slip-yoke splines.

This was a sound I had many years ago, it also is only heard once if you change direction (ie D or R). I think it where the bushes of the diff housing.
