Default What filter is this? (img)

I had to change a headlight bulb, and found this little surprise blocking my access to the bulb.
Looks like a fuel filter, but I don't see any reference to it anywhere.

It's located behind the drivers (left) headlight front wheel well.

BTW... I did manage to change both bulbs to a beautiful bright white

What a PIA getting access to that cover. arg..

That's the head on collision fireball igniter. My car does not have that option.

Seriously WTF is it?

Looks like an aftermarket inline fuel filter to me too. Is it full of fluid?

Assuming the screenwash reservoir is also on the left on LHD vehicles then with the liner removed it should look like my RHD 2001 XK8.

The only factory fitted black coloured fluid pipes in this area are screenwash overflow, screenwash feed and headlamp wash feed (if fitted). Can't see any reason to splice a filter into any of these.

You never know what a PO may have done. Check you fuel line is the OE feed from the fuel filter to the rail and it hasn't been 'modified' to get over some issue with the line or the filter.

When it comes to changing bulbs, I always find it faster to remove the wheel for unrestricted access through the wheelarch liner cover.

Is it to filter fuel into the screenwash, to avoid it freezing on cold mornings? You light a match, hit the squirter and your screen is instantly cleared of ice.

Apparently I'm not the only one that stumbled across this. I doubt 2 PO happen to install this.

Maybe it's just in our 1998s. Next time someone brings up a Silverstone or how they moved to 4.2 engine or Mercedes transmissions, we'll just have to remind them of this:-) haha.

The purge valve is in the left fender area.
Not 100% positive but I think was was an evap system purge valve filter in the earlier models, then in '99-'02 they removed it and eventually added it back in this TSB: http://jagrepair.com/images/TSB/XK8/303-63.pdf (see step 15).

Anthony---

There you go. The filter you have even looks like the one in the drawing.

This is the reason I read this forum. Someone will always have the answer if they want to take the time like WhiteXKR has. You owe him a thanks.

It looks more like an 'installation' than a 'bodge' in the TSB illustration.

No reference to this filter in JEPC but it's a readily available part from many sources.
