Default What Makes an 06 an 06?

Whats the deal? My car is an 06 on paper, (title, registration, warranty papers etc) how can there be 06's if they were all made pre July of 05? Did it have to do with date of delivery?
Thanks

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. The last of the 2006 XK8 were built in the summer of 2005, just like the last of the 2008 S-Types were built in the summer of 2007. That's just the way Jaguar/US decided to label the Model Year of those particular end-of-the-line cars. The MY identification has nothing to do with the date of delivery, nor with the date of manufacture. It's primarily an advertising gimmick (and also the 10th digit on the US VIN).

Every manufacturer starts making cars for the upcoming year about midway through the previous year.

Last time I checked, here in the US, you could buy a car for the next year before it was even that year.

In fact, you can buy a 2013 Mustang right now!

There are very few 06 XKs, because production started around May and then stopped mid-summer. My XKR is an August 05, so it must be one of the very last.

As Jaguar wanted to get rid of stock, they threw in just about every option as standard on the run-out models.

As the VIN numbers run consecutively, you can tell exactly how close to last it is. The final XK8 (a Frost Blue XKR 4.2-S Coupe in the JDHT collection) which came off the production line on Friday 27th May 2005 has VIN A48684.

Thanks for that, Graham. I just checked and it mine A48100. It must have been built and then registered a few months later.

Ours is A47958. The door jamb label shows that it was built in May 2005. I like the fact that because it was at the tail end of the production line, Jaguar threw in a number of options to help empty out the parts bins....

Our 2005 S-Type was also built in May 2005, but it remained a 2005 model....

Mine is 900 from last and was originally delivered to Park's Jaguar in Ayr on 16th June 2005. They were able to confirm it remained in their showroom until sold to the first owner three month later. It's been resold and serviced by Parks' Jaguar exclusively until I purchased it there last November.

It's very likely yours was similarly in the original Jaguar dealer's showroom until they had another to take its place. The last one built that JDHT have on display is identical spec to yours.
