what is in a new engine
So I am getting my 911 smogged at a gas station where there is an XK8. I walk over to look and it is a 2000 with 63k miles. I give the mechanic my card with a note to the guy about calling me if he wants to know how to add bluetooth. The car is at the station because of restricted performance. So I go to work and the owner calls.
His engine failed at 50k miles due to tensioner problem. He paid $11K for a new engine installed by the gas station mechanic. He was driving from San Jose to Carmel when the restricted performance came on and he limped back home. Now the codes are gone and the mechanic is waiting for the problem to surface. The mechanic thinks it is a coil pack.
The owner is puzzled by this. The mechanic tells him the new engine did not come with new coil packs. The old coil packs were transferred over.
Anyone else ever heard of this?

Coil packs can go bad, but at 63K that seems too soon...not that time ever stopped anything on a Jag from failing. They are easy to change -- IF that's the problem. A decent diagnostic should show. But what about the others?
One thing begs the question: why spend $11,000 for an engine on a car worth less that $11,000? Why spend any more?
Dunno what they are new from Jag, but here's one to get the car running again (and about 30 minutes to change it):
