Question When to change oil??

Recently bought a 2006 XK8 w/28,000 miles on it. It's my first Jag and couldn't find much in the forum about this.

So, what's the general consensus on when to change it? Every 3K?

Thanks

Oh boy, here we go again!

mbates, that is an extremely debated topic on this forum, as well as which oil to use.

You will get a myriad of opinions. Personally, I think that the manufacturers recommendations are a very good place to start.

In my case, if they recommend 10,000 miles, I'd do it a little sooner. Most people feel that a good quality oil should be good for way more than three thousand miles in one of these cars, assuming that the engine was fairly clean when you bought it, which, at only 28,000 miles, it should be.

Jaguar's recommendation is 10K miles (standard service) or once a year whichever comes first. This interval is nothing new or revolutionary, many new cars today go 15K.

Follow Jag's recommendation also for oil viscosity, found in the owner's manual.

Mine's a daily driver so I change it about every 7500 miles or after 1 year, whichever comes first. I use high mileage synthetic, but majority of my drive is stop and go.

Use the OE filter or one with the check valve. Your engine will thank you.

Search the forum for this topic. You will get as many answers as there are posts. Real answer is keep it clean, based on your driving habits.

This is the real answer:

Change it at whatever frequency makes you feel good.

As long as you're performing regular maintenance, you're good. If you're using natural oil, you're probably good up to 10k miles. If you're using high dollar synthetics, probably 15-20k, though if you're gonna do that, might as well start having samples tested until you get a better idea of when your oil is starting to break down.

I use fossil oil and I change it every 4-6k miles. That's what makes me feel good... and the oil hasn't even really discolored when I do the change.

So, don't let anyone tell you what is right... take all advice with a grain of salt, but know this, you're probably not doing any harm letting it go a couple thousand miles more than anyone tells you...

Just for reference... does this advice change any for the supercharged amongst us?

My mechanic recommends 3-5k on dino for mine, though I am eyeing closer to 5k-7500. 5k is what makes me feel good though. And once you get your ODO lined up with that interval, it's easy to remember too.

I'll bet he does. Are you putting his kids through college or paying his alimony?

Jaguar recommended interval for both NA and SC is is 12K Miles OR 12 Months, whichever comes sooner.

Graham

I'm with Norri, but I have a hard time knowing which day is Saturday since I'm retired.

Me too. Saturdays and Sundays are best identified by going past the parking lots at the supermarkets or big box stores. If they're jam-packed, it's the weekend. Go home and try again tomorrow or the day after.

I change the oil & filter on both of our Jaguars at 6,000 miles. Conventional Castrol 5W-30 in both. By 6,000 miles, the oil has turned from golden-colored to light brown in the XK8's 4.2 and medium brown in the S-Type's 3.0. Works for me....

Jon-

FWIW- oil colour is meaningless with respect to judging it's condition or a need to change. Worst possible indicator.

I realize that. I simply pointed out the color differences at the same mileage between the two very different engines....

Like I said, 6,000 miles works for me....

Despite what Jaguar says, I have a REAL PROBLEM with oil changes every 10-12K miles. Anyhow, thanks for all the replies.

I guess the real answer is: HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU HAVE?

With all the problems with Jags I see on this forum, I'd be REAL reluctant to wait a year or 12K miles to change oil.

But hey, just because everybody is out to get me, doesn't mean I'm paranoid...

I would guess that none of the problems on this forum are engine oil-change interval related.

I can't recall seeing any, but the bottom line with oil arguments is that owner should do what makes him/her happiest irrespective of any other factor.

In an effort to finally put this whole argument to bed Once And For All, I asked a local Guru. However, it turns out his mother is a Wiccan. Here is what he told me:

Merry meet! All other dweomers being equal, the phases of Mother Moon are the most powerful magickal influence upon any incantation you may devise. The Goddess has charged our heavenly protectoress with the turning of tides and seasons—astral as well as earthly—and as She waxes and wanes, so does the potency of our charms! In some of Her phases, the amethyst crystal can sharpen your sixth sense, and it may be twinned to your runestones, or even steeped in a healthful nettle-and-foxglove tea to aid in your scrying-spells. But beware! In other phases, the opposite is true, and using any crystal but the blood-tourmaline will rend your power from you or twist your magicks along the Dark Path! So that you may step carefully, consult with your circle's Elders before attempting any of the rituals or incantations of the Major Arcana. If your Elders are fasting, meditating or Wind-walking, seek ye the 69 convergent Lunar phases in the grimoiries of our hallowed Sage, Wolfling SilverRaven. At the very least, please consult your Tarot!

So. I think that sorts that out.

Hmm. Sounds more like the standard Lucas troubleshooting guide from the 50's and 60's to me.

Pretty typical lingo, here in Southern California.
