Default Will the 4.2 XKR

Will the 4.2 XKR engine take high mileage without needing a re build?

Provided it has been well maintained with regular oil changes and never overheated, you should comfortably see the odometer reading double on yours!

Expect to replace hoses and the like as they age. But the engines seem good.

Well I have looked through most of the high mileage posts ,and there is little said about engines .
There is however quite a lot about 6 speed gearboxes/transmissions what do I look and listen for.

Another thing my doors window seals the rubber is lifting with some sort of powder substance underneath?
Are new window surround hard or expensive to source.

thanks bob

Consider changing your ATF. Regardless of what you read in your owners manual or what your local Jaguar dealership service manager may tell you, there is no such animal as "lifetime" fluid. The friction modifiers in all ATFs wear out over time and heat cycles....

Yes and yes, but they can be refurbished at home with a little patience. Search 'Dorchester Gray' in the XK8/R forum and you should find several links discussing this.

When I discovered replacements for my 4.2-S were £400+, refurbishment looked instantly more attractive.

Keith Westra did his Dorchester Gray window seals and I followed the same technique to do the Satin Black ones on my (then) 2005 XK8. Both are detailed in this thread:

Links to OnLine storage can sometimes be a problem. I've copied and posted it below.

This Parts Catalogue extract could make it easier to identify the trim:

I think it must be item 2 .It shows up quite clear in the Pic. The rubber is distorted and there appears to be oxidation to the pillar under the seal. Both front and rear horizontals have been changed .

I'd expect this Seal Retainer (item 2) to be a similar aluminium & rubber construction to the Waist Rail although, as I've always had Coupes, I haven't closely examined this part on a Convertible.

If so, the white oxide will be due to the same poor priming by the manufacturer and you should be able to refurbish it in a similar manner.

I have had another look. it is the seal on the A pillar underneath the heavy rubber one, it is held in place with 5 screws.
If you look at the photo its the seal with lumps and bumps on it,

I can not find it on ebay as I don't know its parts no or correct description

Item 2 circled in red...... ?

Will the 4.2 XKR-bt_bob2.jpg

Here's the Parts Catalogue with the P/N's expanded:

In the UK, you could try S N G Barratt in Bridgnorth or David Manners in Oldbury.

The fuse for a start.

Driver's side Fascia Fusebox - Fuse #14 (20amp).

If that's OK, then it's the Console out the check the connections.

Refurb of this part is not very easy, in fact I have never seen it done, I bought replacement on ebay from a California car which were in good condition.

I think the problem you will have is that the cigarette lighter is powered by the ignition circuit, so the key must be on for it to work.

You will need to tie into a permenantly connection for your solar cell.

I am also pretty sure it is the passenger side fuse box, but it should be #14.

I should have written RH in the location in my post #17 but as bt_bob1 and I are both in the UK, it's our driver's side.
