Default Will a failing fuel pump throw error codes?

For the first time ever my 2001 XKR took several "cranks" to fire this morning (It felt like fuel starvation or no spark) and displayed "engine failsafe mode warning". Turned ignition off and re-tried and started first time as usual. No error codes and no pending error codes. Ran perfectly on my trip into work and had been running perfectly before.

Just wondering if this might be a symptom of a failing fuel pump?

There are no codes directly associated with the pressurized fuel system. The 'R' cars have two fuel pumps and when one fails you at least get a little warning of impending complete failure. You describe such a symptom.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I'll get them checked/replaced

Have you seen the thread that details how to test for a failed pump on the XKR?

From my experience, a bad primary pump on the 4.0 XKR causes at least heavy engine 'shudder'. The lack of fuel-pressure may then eventualy cause error messages. The pumps themself are not monitored by the ECU, only the relais, that drive them.

But for testing purposes, you can exchange the role of the 2 pumps by exchanging the pins on the 'last-before-fuel-tank' connector (sorry, don't know how to describe better). I did this on my MY2000 to get the car running with a failed primary pump.

Good luck

I pulled the primary and secondary pump relays as per WhiteXKR's post and had no issues. Car started first turn of the key with each pump disconnected.

I'm thinking I just had a "glitch". To be sure I've spoken with my trusted Indy mechanic who did my chain tensioners and he can replace the pumps if needed. I'm just going to wait and see what happens. If it happens again I'll just get them replaced to be on the safe side.
