Wiring in a second accessory plug-in?
My portable nav unit has to plug into my cigarette lighter receptical which is far from convenient. I'd like to put a second one in the glove box interior or at least under the dash where the cord would be out of the way and less unsitely. I could splice into the wires of the cigarette lighter but perhaps there is a better way?
Has anyone done this?
How easy to get at those wires under the consul?
Thanks Folks.

I have attached the Jaguar instructions for adding the dealer accessory power outlets, there are two, one in the glove box and one in the trunk.
jaguar XK aux powersocket.pdf
Note: This is an abbreviated document that has instructions for all models but the whole document wouldn't upload.
If you are handy you do not need to buy the kit or install it as directed, because this document will tell you where the connectors are and you can tap into them.
That said I hardwired my radar, satellite radio and phone charger by tapping into the cigarette lighter harness. Everything tucks neatly underneath the console with no visible wires. I also drilled a small hole in the tray below the armrest to access the phone charger so I can charge the phone while it is stored (I have the factory bluetooth system)
Hope this helps!

I removed my factory nav unit and installed a Garmin 1490t in the hole. There were wires behind the nav unit where I got my power. I used some wire taps from radio shack so I didn't have to cut the factory wiring, and then I tapped a female accessory receptacle (also from radio shack) onto that. Do you have a copy of the electrical guide? It was very helpful for identifying the correct wires to tap into. And you don't need to tap into the accessory circuit. You could tap into the glove box light bulb circuit as long as you're not going to try to power a tv or something from the new receptacle. A gps doesn't draw much power.

MarcB: You stated that you have installed a satelitte radio. Maybe you could answer a question.(if I should start a new thread, someone tell me) My car had a satellite radio when I got it. The satelitte radio is supposed to play through the car radio. (maybe they are all that way) I am supposed to tune the car radio to FM 80.1. When you use seek it will only go as low as fm 87.1 because that is the lowest station. The book says to hold the seek button for five second an then I can tune lower one click at a time. It does not work. Can you tell me how I can get the radio to tune lower than the last station?

That is true! Your satellite radio receiver should have a setup menu which allows you to program the frequency. In my area 96.7 works best. I also found that the direct FM connection (in-line connection to the antenna at the back of the head unit) is your best bet, short of a direct aux input. The antenna connector on my car fit into it perfectly without any adapters or modification.

Through some quick research I have found it is still available; Part# C2A 1403 and it has an MSRP of 89.00 USD. I am guessing if you contact one of the forum's featured sponsors you would get a better price.

Use this link and send them a note on your car and the year and they will provide you with all the options they have available. http://www.discountcarstereo.com

I checked on JaguarParts.com website (generally the most reasonable pricing I have found) and the kit was still $71.61. Seems pretty pricey for a receptacle and some wires.

Doug,
That part # shows up in the 2005 accessory brochure for $17.05!
There are also some other useful items in this doc. I'm seriously thinking about getting the nonslip trunk tray system.
Here's a link to the brochure that conveniently provides part #'s as well.

Which wire would i be able to tap into right behind the nav unit? I am going to attempt to replace the OEM nav with an aftermarket nav. I've got all the info I need for setting that up, thanks to this forum, but being electronically challenged I'd like to know which colored wire to use for power.
Thanks

As far as power goes, I used the three prong Aux power plug next to the battery. You do need to plug a standard automotive relay into the empty socket in the fusebox to use it though.

Judging from the context of this thread, I am thinking now that you are adding a portable unit behind the wood dash. If that is the case, you can tap the black/pink wire for ground, and the white/blue wire for ignition switched +12v. Both these wires are on the smaller 12-pin connector to the nav. screen.
Also. make sure you wire to the power adapter, not directly to the portable nav unit. The power adapter steps down the voltage to the nav unit, which is a must or you may damage it.

To expand on WhiteXKR's comments above, at Radio Shack you can buy a cigarette lighter adapter splitter. You want the flexible kind, not the hard plastic kind. Cut off one of the two female sockets, then you can insert the plug from your GPS cord into that. Use wire taps (available at Radio Shack or an auto parts store) to tap into the colored wires that WhiteXKR pointed out above. That's exactly how I installed a Garmin 1490t into my dash. I wrapped lots of electrical tape around the plug and socket to keep it from coming apart. The Garmin turns on automatically when I start the car, and it turns off automatically after a 30 second delay when I turn off the ignition. I love it!
I really need to make a video showing how I did it.
