Default Would you buy an XKR-100 convertible with a salvage title?

The car has 60 k miles looks very clean - has the service record - original all the way but it was in an accident a few years ago- It now has a salvage title
Would you buy it, what would you pay for it and I guess my question is, what do you think it's worth?

No way to know what it is worth at this point. You may want to consider having it inspected by a qualified professional if you are truly interested in purchasing it....

NO. Please read this: https://www.valuepenguin.com/how-get...-salvage-title

The only way I'd remotely consider it would be if BOTH:
  • the cost was well below salvage value (~10% of normal value) AND
  • the vehicle was so interesting to me that it is worth the insuring hassle.
TANSTAAFL applies here

Maybe, it is is a "rebuilt" title. A neighbor who deals in cars says that the value should be about 30-40% below normal Kelly Blue Book. Note that a rebuilt may be more difficult for you to sell later on, should you decide to sell at a later date.

Here in Nevada, only dealers and scrap yards are allowed to buy a salvage title vehicle, and you cannot sell one or register one as an individual buyer. Other states may have different "classifications" and rules. The Insurance issues mentioned in the above link are also a major consideration.

What year?

Maybe for the right price. I wouldn't touch it if the seller can't provide details and pictures. In CA, salvage can mean anything from relatively minor cosmetic "fender bender" to full on, airbags deployed, major structural damage "totaled". Carfax may provide severity and location. I considered one car that had "minor damage" to center front end. Price wasn't low enough. Also depends on how well the repairs are done. Done by a pro shop (can't tell) is good. I'd pass on a repaired car that wasn't done right (color doesn't quite match, abnormal gaps in panel spacing, etc)

Have a similar problem. It's a 2004 (54k) w/ a replacement engine several years ago. Engine from Jag Bits (invoice says 53k mileage, 6 mo warranty when sold). Virtually no mileage on the replace engine so no history. Big red flag. Owner has health problems which is why no use. Full service record from a great shop that specializes in Jags. How do you evaluate it? Compression test but what else? If it looks and drives well, offer maybe 5k? 6k?

Perhaps this was not a cost-effective decision for the owner (and I wonder why it cost so much and why the owner paid so much, but nevermind), but this is not particularly a concern for a prospective buyer. The aforementioned repairs certainly did not increase the value 8K over its value with those things working. The car may well be worth less than the owner just spent to fix it, effectively decreasing its time value to the owner below zero.

14K??? That's a big NO for me.

The scenario I'd be concerned about is if your vehicle gets hit and totaled by someone else and their insurance company says that, because you have a salvage titled vehicle, they will only pay you salvage value for your loss. Perhaps if you have an agreed-value policy with your ins. co., things might be different.

Since I am now past the limit of my insurance knowledge, I welcome any insurance experts to clarify this.

Unless the owner can tell you why it's a salvage title (and provide proof), I'd pass unless you can get it for a ridiculous price.

Agree w/ Dale's comments on car value and repair costs.

I agree, 14 k for an XKR-100 convertible with 60 k miles and a salvage title is too much, The car is work 10 k at most and that if there is no frame damage and that the car has been repaired and repainted professionally

Any thoughts?

Far too risky a proposition. Time to move on....

For 14k you should be able to find a 2002 in good condition with a clear title.

My 2002 XKR convertible had 48K on it and I bought it for $8K
Only issue was that it has been sitting for+ 1year so I spend about $1500 to have my mechanic go over it and do preventive maintenance.
would not touch a salvage unless it is fully documented.and at right price

That's a good deal. How did you find it? Prices on these cars are all over the map. I wouldn't touch a salvage that's anything other a minor cosmetic (w/ proof).

Ozbot - recent sale of a 2004 (57) for 13.9 Looked nice, no problems, drove well.

Run away as fast as you can. Way too much & if he is replacing suspension components on a salvage vehicle, somethin's WRONG! BTW, as a price reference, when I was hunting for my coupe, there was an XKR fcoupe or sale on Ebay for about 16K, less than 40K on the odometer, and it took forever to sell.

I'd say shop around, You're in Los Angeles, these come up for sale pretty often here for under $10k. 2002 at 60k miles, to me is the danger zone. Anything under 2003 has the 4.0 engine with plastic internals. At 60k miles you cant be sure these were replaced. 4 years ago, I bought my 2004 (4.2 upgraded engine version) clean title, hit on side but insurance repaired/repainted, at 100k miles for $5k in Anahiem. I've paid $4 for maintence, potential repairs, and upgraded parts. (power streering hose, brakes, tires, some suspension stuff, O2 sensors, new coils, and whatnots). The car has been to San Fran, Vegas many times, and is now nearing 200k miles, driving perfect, no check engine and cruises through STAR smog check. Orange County is a great hot spot to find Jaguar, or any exotic gems.in great condition for good prices. Got my Porsche 987s in Newport beach and Maserati Gran Sport spyder in Manhatten beach area. Search behind the "orange curtain"!

I'd only buy a Salvage titled vehicle for theft recovery. Nothing else.

My xk8 has a reconstructed title. The previous, previous owner hit a deer and it was totaled. He bought it back from insurance and had it rebuilt with a parts car and had it inspected by a certified shop. He then sold it to the guy I bought it from for a cheap price. I bought it with the knowledge that it wasn't worth what a "clean" car was, and also with the thought that I don't plan on selling it, bit if I do, I could probably get what I paid or more due to the lot of spares, including a factory replaced engine. As far as insurance, I've had no problem insuring mine. It all depends on what your plans are. If you think you'll flip it for more money, probably not. If you, like me, have wanted one since they came out and you just plan on enjoying it and the price is cheap, why not. I will say the price of the on you're looking at, as others have said, is way too high. I probably pad a little too much for mine, but like I said, I got a pile of parts with it and it was exactly what I wanted

The only upside of buying a properly repaired salvage vehicle is that you don't have to worry about future value, it's not going to have any! You can just drive it as much as possible, as it should have been very inexpensive compared to comparable examples. Properly repaired, it isn't going to announce it's salvage title and there's no reason to advertise the fact to your friends, they think that you're crazy enough, buying any Jaguar. However, .... if you are the kind of owner that would rather dote over your car than to drive it, then definitely don't buy a car with a salvage title. Just the thought will constantly torment you, and ultimately you will always be a little ashamed of it, and never satisfied with your purchase.

If it's a good car, and it's a very good deal, and you plan to drive it a lot, and you can accept that it will be worth much less when you decide to sell it, than go ahead. I'm not trying to be a jerk, it all depends on your outlook. I bought a salvage '70 Mustang myself, about seven years ago.

Yep and I should throw in that I use my xk8 as a daily driver! It was built to be driven and, while I don't want anything to happen to it, I do actually park it in parking lots at stores, without taking up 3 parking spots lol! It still gets plenty of looks!
