Default Wrong tranny fluid

I am looking at a '99 that was sitting for several years. Guy who bought it knows nothing about Jags so he changed the tranny filter and put in synthetic fluid. He drove it a mile, hard shift between 1st and 2nd then fail safe mode.
can the tranny be successfully flushed and correct fluid installed with no damage?
thanks.

You can always replace the transmission fluid with the correct stuff, but the question is what kind of damage did the transmission suffer from the original mistake? Have you pulled any codes?

Could be the reason it was sitting for so long.

My guess would be the transmission had failed and the owner did a fluid flush hoping it would somehow resurrect it.

+1. I don't think changing to synthetic is the problem. The properties wouldn't be that different. I wonder if all the transmission fluids aren't mostly synthetic now.
