The Valet Key won't open the boot, but the Std key should. Do you only have one Key?

It will be a little tricky, but a coat hanger in the window (or a locksmith with tools) will get the door open, then pop the hood (bonnet) and charge the battery with the underhood terminals, then pop the trunk lid (boot lid).

As Ungn said you can charge the battery from under the bonnet.

Spray some lubricant in the keyhole and then try all of the keys you have in the trunk opening. With the inside opening switch and the ability to open it with the button on the key, the actual key hole can go unused for years and years. Sometimes a little lubrication can help in such situations. Sometimes the lubricant can take a while to have effect, don't expect it to necessarily happen immediately.

You should be able to pull the door handle open with a proper length coat hanger/wire - straight with a hook at the end.

Sliding/stacking Credit cards between the pillar seal and back of the window glass helps enlarge the gap to take the pressure off the wire for manuevering.

Yeah, it takes a lot of credit cards to keep a Jag running!

I thought that the 4.2 motor didn't come in the XK8 until 2003?

Any Green key will be Valet and will not open the boot. If you have black keys attached to remote controls these should open the boot manually. If it's cold or frozen you can heat the key carefully with a cigarette lighter. Not too hot, just hot to the touch. You can also spray lubricant into the key hole. The car is probably in sleep mode, and then the battery died. Good luck
