Default XK8 1999 - - - faulty VVT?

hi all,

been away for a while but been keeping up with the threads. now back with some questions for the experts here (or anyone else that may be able to help).

i seem to be getting a 'rattling' noise while driving (XK8 coupe 1999). having spoken to a local independent jag garage, they seem to be of the opinion that it could be something faulty with the VVT unit. they have asked me to bring the car in for further inspection. i thought i'd ask the experts here since you guys have been very helpful in the past. i would like to know whether this 'rattling' noise could be attributed to a faulty VVT unit and also what kind of cost should i expect.

many thanks
tariq

Could be, but also could be the accessory belt tensioner.

There are electrical connectors at the top of each VVT valve, at the front of each valve cover. Disconnect them and see if that stops the rattle. Careful, 10 year old plastic on an engine can be brittle.

The belt tensioner has a history of failure. The VVT's don't.

thanks for your reply test point.

i've had the drive belt tensioner changed some months ago, so i am assuming that is ok. i'm no expert by any means so this question may seem a bit obvious, if i disconnect the wires at the top of the VVT unit, will i still be able to drive the car? also, just to give you some more detail, the rattling noise only seems to come while the car is in motion while gently accelarating (no rattling noise if the car is at idle).

many thanks

You will get an alarm that they are disconnected and may get restricted performance but the car should be driveable.

Using premium fuel?
