Default XK8 2005 XK8 fuel filter

No doubt this question has been asked, but almost everyone advertising fuel filters says that the threaded (and cheap) Purolator fits the 2005. Many sources specifically state that the non-threaded (and hugely expensive) filter does NOT fit the 2005. And, just to be even more absurd, one web site even lists both types as fitting the 2005! Give me a break!
So I started to do what I should have done in the first place (!) From a 1998 manual pdf image, I gather that the threaded type was used, but my 2003-5 manual shows the spindly non threaded type, so I guess I squandered $12!
The Forum offers that the fuel filter changed in 2003 and rationale was offered regarding pressure drops etc. Fact is that whilst searching under the car (in vain) for the filter location, I noted that someone had put a jack against the lines at the front of the car and squashed them pretty flat. Not enough to make any difference to the running of the engine evidently - so much for worries about head pressure and losses - but well enough will be left alone. If the non-threaded filter is needed, then that item - I saw one at $172 (!) will also be left alone, all the more so as it looks like a job for a lift (which I do not have) - assuming the filter really exists
I have 60k on the car. Is there any need to worry about the filter, absent any running problems?

I'm glad you posted this as I didn't know they changed the design. They are available for $99 on ebay and it looks like you will have to move the heat shield in front of the rear axle.

I have 52K mi and am not in a hurry to replace mine, but it's always possible that it's a mistake. Unless you cut it apart you don't know the condition.

This is interesting regarding the 2005 year model. The 2005 search on Google shows the quik disconnect type. They are similar to the Motorcraft FG 986B ($12) unit which I have used for 20K miles. Is there a change to a different type? Regarding the partially crushed lines, maybe you should attempt to carefully squeeze them back to a round position as close to original as possible. You could be suffering a slight restriction that could STRESS your fuel pump. You know how much fun the fuel pump is to replace. The R & R on filter isn't too difficult with left Rear wheel off and jack stand support. Best to attempt after an overnight bleed down on fuel pressure. Let us know on fuel filter please.

^^ Another vote for the Motorcraft fuel filter mentioned above. I installed one on my wife's 2006 XK8 as part of the 90,000-mile service I did and it was a perfect fit. I ordered it from amazon.com for about $12 perhaps three years ago....

The fuel filter is on the front side of the driver-side rear wheel, sort of tucked in. It definitely has the "quick connect" type fitting. There should be a light-colored trigger on one side of the line fitting that needs to be pushed in to release.

For some reason, the parts store reference for the XK8 is wrong "everywhere", must have been wrong from the beginning. It looks like Purolator F65277 works, instead.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Not a great difference in price here in the UK. This company - Euro Car Parts - usually has a 30% discount, so at about 1.3 US dollars to the UK pound, we're not talking big money !!

I recently did the fuel filter on my 04 XK8. I also bought the wrong one at first. Got the correct one from Rock Auto for under $10. Wix 33078

Write up about it is in my working thread here.

Either the Purolator or the WIX mentioned will fit. Put your car on Jack Stands, Remove drivers side Rear wheel (Ease of Access) and you'll have it done in about 30 minutes.

When I changed mine the fuel I poured out of it was nasty and black. I think the lower half of the canister must collect sediment and it just sits in there.

Is it safe to bleed off fuel pressure by running the car, pulling the fuel pump fuse, and waiting for the car to stall?
This would avoid the overnight wait for fuel system work.

That is the preferred method.

Default fuel filter...revisited....

gents,

in reading on the forum i became curious as to the age of XKRFACE's filter age (among many questions)... I bought her a year ago with 75k and no history.
in crawling under her i see "jaguar" on the side and am sure it is factory with now 77k on my cat...so, the question...
she is an xkr... is my filter the same as an xk8 ? will the same part number fit and flow properly for my cat ?
ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED !!

a happy new year to you all,

max & XKRFACE
