Default XK8 cracked gearbox valve body ZF 5HP24

Having just changed the A Drum I was looking over the valve bodies with a view to checking for wear in the bores as I gather the broken drum is probably the result of a pressure spike and have found a crack in one of the castings.

Can anyone offer advice, hopefully other than to buy another box to cannibalise please? I'm living near Worcester in the UK. Thanks a lot.

Try a call to JPAT in Bristol, they may have one in stock or offer a repair, they are about 90 mins from you. Contact for parts is: 01934 853956 or they have a web site www.jpat.co .uk
Or try going onto some of the Range Rover forums & try to get hold of RRphil who is pretty much a guru on these boxes.

Thanks a lot palantir, just the sort of advice I was looking for. I joined the Land Rover forum and have replied to one of RRPhil's posts, so hopefully he'll be in touch. I'll let you know how I get it sorted.

The same problem was found when the transmission on my '99 was rebuilt. They used one from another. Seems it is not an isolated incident.

It's a known problem on Rangies, Beemer's & Jaguars. Easy fix but its getting the part at the right price, it's always worth the time to strip out a replacement box to crack test that area before fitting as it may well have the same fault lurking within.

I recently replaced my valve body and I got it from Eriksson Link Eriksson Industries but it is in the US and you are in England. I would suggest going to the ZF page Link ZF Friedrichshafen AG - ZF Friedrichshafen AG and see if they can put you on to an authorized dealer for ZF in your area. I found them to be most helpful in understanding my problem and providing help.

We had that same issue of a cracked valve body on a customers car right after they overheated the engine. Of course the transmission oil cooler is in the radiator is why that seemed to happen.

both the drum and the v/b are a result of the problem ,not the problem .
as you said the problem is spiking mainline pressure . Transco make a p.r. valve kit to FIX the problem.

Cheers chaps.

I ended up getting all the stuff from the States via Ebay and am in the process of putting it together now. Jag owners certainly don't stop learning.

'Bigskypowertrain' provided another valve body and seal kit for the A clutch drum.
'cascadetransmissionparts' provided a new F clutch drum piston.
'usa.industries' provided a new A clutch drum.
'worldwidepartsoutlet' provided a pressure regulator valve repair kit, so hopefully it'll not happen again.

One thing at a time but the next job will be lifting it back up. The cars on blocks so I'll probably have to buy a transmission jack.

I've seen a couple of diferent pictures showing a crack in that area by the numbering but, typically, I can't find any now.

edit: Gus & pdupler to the rescue

Transmission Shop Invoice.

I was amazed at how similar all the cracks look. I just got mine back from the shop. Drives like a new car now. New clutches, drum, torque converter, valve body etc...
Just a hair over $3000 including removal and installation.

Wow, that's a really good price Nerobergstr, you did well. Mine car was on blocks for months on the drive and it was a gamble whether it would even work.
Though it was worth it, the gearbox seems a lot smarter than it did and the mpg has definitely improved, I was lucky to get 20mpg before it blew and now can easily get 27/28 on a run.
