Default xk8 engine swap/interchange

hey there, i've looked all over but all the interchanges (including hollander) state that only the '99 motor will fit a '99. sellers on ebay list 99-01...

my question is, i know 97-01? had the 4.0, but i believe they changed in late 98? will 99-01 directly interchange? and can the 97-98 motor be made to work?

(my situation: bought car based on photo's...as it was 1.5hrs away... seller failed to mention that engine was dismantled and blown... now i have a car with body damage (which i knew about) and a blown motor.)

The 97-98 XK8 uses the AJ26 4.0 liter Engine.

The 99-02 XK8 uses the AJ27 4.0 liter Engine.

You could use a 99-02 AJ27 Engine.

I believe that the XJ8 Engine would work. However, I think that the S-Type has differences.

I hope the price was ridiculously low, as in almost free.

Sorry, man...didn't intend to irritate you, but I've never heard of such a transaction. If the seller truly misrepresented the car, then the law was clearly on your side and something might still be done about it.

Best of luck to you. There are plenty of guys on this forum that can help you get it figured out, if you're willing to spend more money.

everything is sold as-is where-is...... i should have previewed but i had no interest in the 1.5hr drive each way... your comment just really had no value to it, i saw it as trying to **** me off honestly. obviously with the thought that it was an impound...no key, and the body damage, one (who has been doing this awhile) would assume it was wrecked, and left on the side of the road to long thus getting towed, impound got it...sold it as-is because a key is to expensive to justify for them. happens often, however these guys were shady A-holes...ends up it was abandoned at the jaguar dealer after the owner couldn't afford the repair cost, towed (the tow yard did the body damage), they got title and sold it. i found this out from the dealership (when i showed up at the dealer to have a key made/programmed they literally came out asking why it was there...is less than friendly terms, ends up since they're the only jag dealer in oregon, they remembered it....they were nice enough to print me off the records of it though)

OUCH!! That had to really **** you off, Know I would have been. That said, If you do fix the car, I think you will enjoy it as they are really nice cars when taken care of.

The up side is you have a service history, more than most of us and I would love to have one for my car.

Best of luck with the rebuild.

this is what the dealership gave me (repair order)

"C/S engine overheated while driving, started to idle rough, check engine light is on, had to add 1 gallon of coolant, will not stay running. "

then tech's notes: "engine is very noisy when running, has mechanical issue. inspected, engine & related pieces under hood are severely heat damaged, wiring & cooling system, pieces are breaking apart when touched for inspection. parts have been repaired previously & glued together, removed cam covers (literally falling apart due to overheating, both covers will need to be replaced), heater & radiator hoses will need to be replaced. removed spark plugs, #3 intake valve has contacted spark plug & piston, engine & various pieces need to be replaced, engine bay shows sign of many oil leaks. further repairs may be necessary after engine replacement. "

what i find interesting about this is the coolant hoses, while old....show no sign of heat damage, the wiring also shows no signs of damage due to excessive heat (they are somewhat brittle...pretty common in a vehicle this old), the valve covers are in no way falling apart or damaged... i pulled both valve covers and the cams/chains looked all fine.

maybe i'll get away with doing a headgasket....i think i'm going to have the keys programmed, and do a compression and CLT test and go from there...

How about a LS1 swap? I saw a great post about the guys at jaguarspecialties (I believe that's what they were called). Apparently they have a kit coming out for a LS1 with a T56 swap for an XK!

their kit is a bit over $1500 then the donor car (1500-3000?) and then the labor...just doesn't add up for me. i'd rather toss a carbed motor in there if it were an option.

Default 1999 Jaguar XK8 Motor

To anyone interested.
I have a 1999 XK8 Convertible with 51,000 miles. Very strong motor. Had accident which T-boned the passanger door. Motor is very good, clean, always serviced with Mobile 1. I live in Houston. Front, rear and driver side parts all good. Carnival Red.

I don't believe you can replace an AJ 26 with an AJ27 engine. Different VVT solonoids/wiring, different Valve timing strategies, different Throttle body that your ECU won't recognize.
