I wish I could hear the sound directly behind the car. It seems that we are hearing mostly from one side and it sounds kind of like a rattle noise. Maybe combined on center it will sound better. I wonder if an X pipe would quell it.

I noticed it 'puffs' at higher RPMs too, though not sure the science behind it. I'll try a video this weekend with me starting up, and driving off. Maybe that will be more clear.

Here's a diagram of the exhaust, the center muffler, circled, is what I removed.

GreenJ, does your configuration still have the back 4 mufflers?

Did a little reading on the X-pipe, and apparently, that's what I should have done instead of going straight back on each side. It intermixes the gases, and tone, so that one side doesn't just hear the 4 cylinders on that one bank.

So, ordered the Magnaflow x-pipe, and going to have it installed next week. Let's see, another $85 for the X-pipe, and another $25 for the weld...this project is adding up. (but will be soo worth it in the end)

Odd - but the links in the forum don't work at all. However, as a subscriber to the thread, the email I get has all links working perfectly.

I look forward to hearing the difference after the X is installed. Thanks for all you do.

I think the general idea about having a common muffler for both banks, is to even out the pulses as the exahust travels. And also to make a buffer for the exhaust pulses in cases where you get a lot of backpressure.

No muffler in the middle and X pipe should be perfect..
I did this on my Maser, did wonders for the sound and also helped performance wise.

Yes my configuration has the 4 mufflers in the rear. According to Jaguarohio this setup is the same as the XJ V12 exhaust setup. This is the way the exhaust was/is when I purchased the car.

Can't wait to hear it with the X-pipe. I may have to invest in it too if it really makes a difference.

Does the R model have the same diameter exhaust pipe as the naturally aspired cars?

Not sure about the R's diameter pipe, I'll say yes w/o confirmation.

I drove around the last couple days with the top down, around town and up to 50mph on some side streets...the low tone is very nice to hear on take off from the stoplight. I really like this sound. The x-pipe should balance out the exhaust pulses, but hoping it doesn't lower the volume any. As its just barely, faintly noticable, that would be disappointing.

No droning sound at freeway speeds?? I was afraid to take mine off because while I want it to sound more like a sports car, I definately dont want the droning noise on the freeway. I made this mistake once on my GMC Yukon a few years back and I hated the sound.

I haven't measured but (based on the x pipe diamerter shown ) I assume that our pipes are 2.5 inches?

I was under the impression that our pipes were 2.25"

I think our pipes are 2.25 also, because the 'connector' pipe (used where the center muffler was) is bigger, I think the 2.5 is the standard size for most exhausts though. I ordered the x-pipe in the 2.5" so my muffler guy can simply cut his existing tubes and insert w/ little trouble.

As for the droning question at highway speeds...none. I wish you could hear it.

This setup produces a nice kitty growl starting around 3500 rpms. No loud drone or resonation at any speed, only when you step on the go peddle.

Looking from rear of car to front of car at resonators
no resonation? really? my friend had a similar thing done but after the project, the car became louder, noisier. any special set up done?

My x-pipe comes in tomorrow, install on Friday, and I'll try a vid w/ sound from inside the car if you like...top down even. Just let me know, I can try anything. Or, I'll give it the 'girl' test - take a girl for a ride and ask her if she thinks it was loud or even if the the rumble was annoying after its over.

I think the tone will lower and so won't the volume of the sound. Might be just like having the center muffler back.

Not sure if I read it here but engine exhaust pluses should be smooth out. Not ever having the X pipe or the center muffler installed I'm looking forward to your report since you had the muffler and had it removed.

I don't want to pay for the pipe and the extra muffler shop charges to find out (at this point in time) so "Write a good report"
