Default XK8 exhaust without center muffler

govatos: Here is what my exhaust looks like without the center muffler. This setup gives you a true duel exhaust.

This setup produces a nice kitty growl starting around 3500 rpms. No loud drone or resonation at any speed, only when you step on the go peddle.

Does this mess with any of the engine set-up? Or since it is behind the cats its all hot air any way. It looks like something I would want to add to my xk. Right I have the mina exhaust from jagxp from the huge resonator back.

That's the way the car came when I bought it. I thought all XKs were like this but found out later I was wrong. Breaths better and sounds good.

Default Sounds Much Better.

I just removed the center muffler from my 01 XKR. Much better sound. Now has a little bark but is still quiet at idle. $50 at local muffler shop.

Any pics to show what it looks like now? I have a 2002R and that sounds like a good improvement - but I'd really want to show a muffler shop exactly what I wanted. Thanks DaleD

Well, with all the good press about a little 'growl' when the center muffler is removed, I took part of the day off and stopped by a local muffler shop to do the deed. In fact, i'm typing this as its being cut out! After I get home, i'll record a video with some soun... took a baseline vid this morning to hopefully represent the differences in sound before n after. So very excited! Also, had the itch to change the tips too while I was here... I will show u the new black chrome ovals tonight!

I am excited for a vid. I've been thinking long and hard about exhaust and if this sounds good, it will hold me off for a few years so I can finish paying for the car before I spend a bunch more on something I "need" . I am also glad you took a baseline vid because different cameras, etc. Will vary sound.

My new tips and the removal of the center muff (going with straight tubing like greenjeans , no x-pipe) cost a whopping $140. $100 of that was for the tips, thats it!

PS, i'm still at work

Ok, here's the scoop and the summary, with a few pics and the video links.

I've had a chance to drive it around city streets and on the highway. On startup, it growls a little, sounds good. Getting up to highway speeds in spirited fashion I can just barely tell there is a deeper resonance to the exhaust (but thats from inside the cabin) Outside, i'm sure its a little throatier. The engine still makes more audible 'noise' than the exhaust. I actually expected more, and am very pleased with the subtle improvement.

On the highway, you can't hear any difference whatsoever. Seriously.

Video clips with sound
I only revved it to about 3500 rpm, as I don't like going higher parked. You can tell the difference upon startup, and upon a little accelerator pedal push.

(Turn up your speakers, its not that loud)

First one is obviously before...

Then after...(I really hate the puffing sound that the straight pipes produce...off to get an X-pipe!)

Lookswise, I love my new tips. They fill out the bumper cutouts sooo much better than the original. Check them out for yourself.

in case anybody wants to know, and perhaps do the same tips as I did, here's what they are -
Angelus, model BRO350, black nickel plated stainless steel, can't by them directly from the manufacture, but most muffler shops can get them, mine had to get them from another shop nearby. Their website picture doesn't do it justice, the tips are a black, with a polished surface to it, even the rolled edges look like regular polished stainless steel.

Think of how much better looking Jaguar could have made the car originally for what? fifty bucks in tailpipe tips? Sometimes I don't understand the bean counters....

Sorry Matt - but the vid/sound clip link doesn't work - at least not for me. Can you repost, or email daled99@me.com. Thanks

I really like the idea/cost of this.

Larger tips are definitely an improvement, as the originals just seem undersized for their allotted space. I'm looking forward to hearing the "growl" when you post a different link.
