Default XK8 gearbox top up problem

Hi.
I have a small leak from my XK8, and thought I would check the gearbox fluid level. I have previously done this on my xj8, but am confused to find that when I take out the filler plug, fluid pours out.
Correct me if Im wrong, but surely this is not right. Do I have to warm the box before taking out the plug?
I have the car raised level.
I can only find info on removing the top up plug after the box has been drained.

Cheers.

Paul

The fluid must be at the correct temperature AND the engine must be running to get an accurate check.

The engine has to be running, circulating the fluid through the system. With the fluid at 30-50 deg C, the fluid will just trickle out with the engine running and transmission in neutral. Before checking, shift to D and R for a few seconds.
I measure the temp by sticking the sensor of a indoor/ outdoor thermometer in the fill port.

Thanks guys that answers that question. I have drained some out, and will refill accurately tomorrow.
