Default XK8 Play on rear wheels

Hi, I have a rattle from the left rear, after jacking up I notice a certain amount of play on the rear wheel when rocked from top to bottom, not much just a millimetre or so, can't tell if this is wheel bearing or outer U joint on driveshaft. No movement when rocked left to right, so I assume the wheel bearing OK.

Then I jacked the right side up and it has the same movement!

My question is:- is this play normal for XK8's or are both outer cv joints in need
of replacement?
Is this a common problem?

Thanks. Tony.

If you get someone else to do the rocking while you look from underneath you should be able to see where the play is. It may be at the differential as the drive shafts act as the upper suspension mountings or it may be in the universal joints which are under a lot of pressure because of this design.

If it's only 1mm it's normal.

I have a rattle also, and I suspect the upper shock mount is going, similar to the front. But I'm not in a hurry and will wait for cooler weather.

Default rear hub bearing

i just had a left hand rear axle hub bearing replaced. left wheel had more play from 12 and 6 oclock movement than the right side. i also had a roaring noise associated with it. cost me $460 and it's all better now. noise started around 30 mph and got worst with speeds. it would sometimes quit with extreme right turns. grease your u joints.
