Default XKR 2000 convertible how reliable

Just wondering how reliable is the XKR convertible? I am looking at purchasing a 50k mile XKR 2000 model 4.0l 5 speed version.

I am planning to drive her as a daily driver, my concern is that the transmission is a fully sealed (no servicable) item which I find very hard to believe especially on a high torque high powered engine car.

How do I tell if this engine has the Nikasil liners or the normal liners.

How reliable is the roof, I hear that the hydraulic lines can fail.

My current ride is a Lexus SC430 which has been very reliable and I have clocked over 350k miles most of it has been trouble free. I will be passing the Lexus to my daughter and looking at the XKR.

Thanks.

I have had two used XKR's, My 2002 daily driver had no serious problems for the three years I had it. Am now in my second year of a 2005 XKR. No problems to date.

If you can do your own work it is a good car to have. If you are paying a mechanic to fix little things that go wrong. Forget about it. It will nickle and dime you to death. These cars are not as trouble free as your Lexus, but they are not as bad as the old Jaguar reputation leads some people to believe.

Scan the Jag sites and you'll see most of the problems that do come up, and you already know the big ones, are easily fixed by aftermarket replacement parts. And yes, the trans needs to be flushed and filed. Lifetime to Jag, (and others, like BMW, means warranty not car) The conventional wisdom now is 100k miles and most of us say change fluid around 50-60K.

You'll never find a better reason to own lots of shiny tools, buy it.

I have had my 1999 XK8 from new and spent far less on repairs than I paid for my wife's Golf GTi.

Only had 3 large repair bills. One for the Air Conditioner ($2K) and another for an engine issue when one of the coild went ($1.5K). The second time I had a coil go I took it to the Good News Garage in Cambridge (aka the Car Talk guys) and got it done for $400.

I am currently doing the convertible hoses myself.

Come to that, my MGB costs me a lot more not to drive it.
