Smile XKR 2001 Transmission Oil change, O2 sensors, 2nd Tensioners

XKR 2001 Transmission Oil change, O2 sensors, 2nd Tensioners

I just changed my trans Oil on my 2001 XKR 47K. Note this is the merc transmission.

1/ I replaced the filter and electrical connector plug (as these leak after a while) . The system holds 11qtrs so I bought 12 and flushed twice as u get about 4 qtrs each time u empty the pan.
2/ While I was under there I removed and replaced all 4 O2 sensors (top one on bank A went) and as I needed access to remove the cat converters (easy way of changing O2 sensors as u cannot get enough access to release them from under the car)
3/ I removed rocker covers and replaced the secondary tensioners. I used a cable tie to secure the secondary chain and removed exhaust cam to get access to the tensioner. Note at 47K and mfr date Jan 2001 mine had the red plastic ones, 1st gen. They were in perfect condition with no cracks or wear.
4/ I also replaced fan belt and super charger belts. The jag supercharger belts are rubbish I've had two and they both squeeled when cold so get OEM ones cheaper and better and no squeel!!
5/ Changed coolant remember to bleed super charger and flush twice.
6/ Change spark plugs.
7/ change oil and air filter

Took me 16hrs total labor over the weekend. The dealer quoted 6K to do this. Very simple job total parts $810 + my time. I took my time as I cleaned everything!! Car should be good to 100K with a few Oil and Air filter changes. These are all DIY jobs if u need help let me know.

Cost
1/ Trans fluid $60 for 12 qtrs amazon
2/ Trans Filter Kit and electrical plug $40
3/ Trans dip stick $22 ebay
4/ 4 O2 sensors Bosch tops $70 bottoms $80 total $300 (jag want $605 each !!)
5/ 2nd Tensioners metal 3rd gen + rocker cover gaskets $210 eBay
6/ Belts $140 Kragen
7/ Dextron coolant 12qtrs $44 Autozone buy one get one free.
8/ 8 spark plugs Iridium $40 amazon with mail in rebate.

Seriously simon, that's a ton of R&R work there, and it must feel pretty good to do it yourself as well. I admire your abilities. You'll be able to advise more XK8/R owners in the future if you stick around to help diagnose and guide others.

I see its your first post also, if you'd like, drop by the new member section and post an introduction about yourself and let everyone greet your properly.

Good Stuff!

And am lookgin forward to your expeirences with the bosch upper O2 sensors. I always thought that you couldn't replace them with justy any model, especially since these re wideband ones. Which type did you use?

Just make sure you check your ATF level, as with the Benz one you need to measure it when the oil is about 80 degrees, and not everyone has a dealertool to read the oil temp sensor in the trans.

Wow, good job! If undertook such a difficult project, my Jag would be out of commission for months..................and I'd still end up paying someone to fix it!

Thumbs up XKR 2001 Transmission Oil change, O2 sensors, 2nd Tensioners

I'm in Silicon Valley. Job was fairly straight forward. The O2 sensors are the following Bosch 15626/15627 these are listed on the Bosch web site (for the XJ supercharged) and have the correct plugs. Note top and bottom are heated ones in that years model. Hardest part of taking O2 sensors out is getting to the plugs and undoing the four nuts at the top where it connects to the manifold.

15626 = $70.98
15627 = $60.78 on Amazon.

Remember alot of aftermarket products are better than Jaguar parts as technology in the last 10 yrs has come along way. Its always worth shopping around as things like fluids can be found with big discounts and no sales tax on places like Amazon or eBay.

I replaced my hood supercharger badge (mine got cracked ) bid on one on eBay and got it for $10 Jaguar dealer wanted $70 LOL

Default 2001 XKR Transmission Fluid

I used the Valvoline MaxLide Dex/Merc ATF which is certified by Mercedes for this transmission. $60 for 12 qtrs Amazon free shipping, electrical plug and filter kit are another $30-40 on the internet. The dip stick I bought has the markings for cold and hot settings (eBay) so I just filled her up and used the cold settings to get it about right. Then waited a few hours and rechecked it while it was really cold note u have to run the engine and cycle through P/R/N/D. Saves buying computer equipment to measure temp. This job is really simple. You do need the Cat converter out if you want to change the electrical connector into the transmission and these seem to weep oil. My car had 49K on it and the outside of the plug was a little damp.

I repeated the oil change 3 times as u get about 4 qtrs out the pan and at 49K if was gritty so I highly recommend doing this change. Transmission seems much smoother after the change.

Did you remove the cats to get at the Os sensors?
How did that go?

Default 2001 XKR O2 sensors

Yes you really do need to remove the Cat converter to get to the O2 sensors.

1/There are 4 13mm nuts on top and as I was changing the 2nd Tensioners I had the cam covers of which gives u a little more access room to these nuts.
2/ Exhaust is just two nuts either side then slide the exhaust back a few inches and support.
3/ Once u have the 4 nuts undone release the O2 plugs (3 behind 1 on left behind throttle body u can access these from right side) and cut the cable tie that secures the O2 cables to the trans housing.
4/ Then release the last 2 support bolts under the trans and the Cat Converts can be removed from under the car.
5/ The O2 sensors can now be removed and replaced.
