Default XKR 5 speed J gate electronics question

I have a 1999 XKR. I have just purchased an Aston Martin DB7 steering wheel complete with '+' and '-' buttons which would be used to shift gears on the aston.

I want to hook these buttons up to the J gate to provide a degree of gear selection (ie pressing down when in drive would push to 4th, 3rd and 2nd as if using the J gate and plus would ultimately take you back to drive). I know this would not be fully tiptronic as the car would still kickdown you floor it but I mainly want to just be able to manually kick down prior to acceleration.

The information I'm after is how the J gate works, is it just a sequence of switches that can be bypassed or is it something more sophisticated or mechanical?

I know paramount and racing green in the UK offer the service but charge over £1000 for the conversion. Anybody have any information on what lurks beneath the J gate or a wiring diagram?

Many thanks
Will

This is something I hope to take on much later this year, but I have nothing to offer now, sorry.
