Default XKR gearshift knob removal

I have been searching the forum for instructions for the removal of my leather and chrome "R" knob. This knob does not have a nut at the bottom to hold with a wrench, it does however have an inverted chrome cone on which the knob sets. The knob is free to turn but the cone is ststionary. The cone also has three holes drilled into it, I have tried flat and phillips screwdrivers and hex key wrenches to see if they would grip and turn something-- nope!. I wonder if a spanner is supposed to insert a tang into one of these holes and then turn? In short does anyone know how to remove this, it should be simple, but it is a JAGUAR. Thanx

The wood *** on my XK8 just unscrewed. No nut to tighten to it and hold it on that I can remember. Sorry, that's all I got.

My knob is like yours, with what appears to be little set screws to lock it in place. I've never checked to see what kind or size they are.
