That is a neat way of reusing the OEM screen. Aftermarket screens don't quite match the screen size of the Alpine original, so you end up with a slightly undersized or oversized screen. On mine I replaced the OEM sat nav with a Garmin Drivesmart 55 - touch screen sat nav, wifi updates, with speed camera locations and speed limits - currently $160 vs $600 for NavTool. Only an afficianado would notice its slightly smaller than the original screen.
