Default XKR White Smoke After Idling

Greetings!

My 2000 XKR is still giving me some issues, even after I did the full rebuild. Had some challenges a while back with coil packs, which resolved after replacing four of them, and it has run well since. Good power, and lovely to drive. One thing keeps cropping up, though.

Occasionally, if the car sits at idle for a minute or two, upon driving away or blipping the throttle, a cloud of white smoke will billow out of the driver side exhaust. This does not happen at initial start up, only after it is warmed up and driven.

Searching the forums, I tried several suggested solutions. Part throttle hose was checked and cleaning process followed. Compression is good. Leak down test was good. I was concerned about excessive blow by, (new rings not seating, or Nicky problems), so coolant was tested for combustion gases, and tested negative (that’s good). Coolant pressure was tested, and is good. I check coolant level before nearly every drive, since the previous owner toasted the engine when overheated, so paranoia strikes deep. It always seems to stay about an inch from the top of the tank.

Since this is an XKR with coolant in use in the supercharger heat exchangers, could they be somewhere I have not considered within that system that could allows seepage into the intake tract at idle, and then consumed once accelerating away?

Sorry for the long explanation, but I want this issue resolved.

Thanks in advance.

TC

It is possible that you have a leaking intercooler. It will put coolant into the intake and when you blip it,the change in vacuum will levitate the little bit of coolant into the airflow.

Thanks for the reply. I will think about some way to pressure test the intercoolers, and see what happens there. This likely didn’t show up when I pressure tested the cooling system, since there is enough separation in the two systems.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again.

Default Weird one - just some clarification

You say it billows white smoke, after running, from driver’s exhaust only when idle. Smoke is noticeable when you blip the throttle from stop.

Are you sure there’s no smoke when moving?

Is the big silencer removed/mod? I would have expected smoke from both RHS and LHS exhaust tips if the problem was in front of car.

Default Long shot - real left field - check oil cap

Another thread pointed out that a smokey exhaust could be from the oil cap letting in air into the cam shaft cover and then introducing oil/air into the throttle body. Engine runs lean then??? Surprisingly, the smoke described was white, not blue.

real long shot but maybe.... zero dollar check

Mr. Johnson,

When you had the Engine apart did you replace the Filters up in the Cam Covers? If they are stopped up, you will get a cloud of "White Smoke" at start-up!
