Default 05 S Type coolant leak

My mom has an 05 S-Type 3.0 thats been leaking quite a bit of cooolant lately, have to refill the reservoir every couple of weeks. Car has under 60k.

Thought I would jumop on here and see if this was a common issue for these cars and what the culprit is.

Thanks

The usual culprit is the small nippe on the expansion tank, the plastic "tank turret" in the themostat piping also wll fall apart with little provocation.

+1 Norri. Check both ends of the small expansion tank overflow hose: the nipples it attaches to are the normal culprits and the leak leaves precious little evidence. If at the tank, you'll need a replacement ~$100 and an easy change. If at the turret, you need an "upper rad hose asy" which is much, much more than it sounds....and near $200 tho I believe nowadays you can find strip-down versions cheaper where you reuse your old thermostat housing and some of the hoses. Not nearly as easy to change as the tank...do yourself a HUGE favor and plunk another $30 on flexible hose-clamp pliers

Yep, the nipple on the top of the tank is broken, the coolant is literally pouring out. I guess I should pick up a new expansion tank. How much does it run from the dealer? Looks like they're going for ~$110 new on Ebay. Part # C2Z13764

I'd guess the dealer might be about $130.

You can get the expansion tank from Gaudin Jaguar in Las Vegas for $109 shipped. I ordered from that dealer before, and I had a good experience with them.
Direct JPLV Porsche Parts.com

Or you can get it from this Jaguar dealer from Kansas shipped for $105. Never ordered from them before though, so I can't vouch for them.....yet....

I bought it from jaguarlandroverhiltonheadon ebay, $112.95 shipped. Installed it tonight, everything seems to be good now. Will keep a close eye on it of course. My mom loves the car. But its got a few little quirks for sure.

Same dreaded top expansion tank nipple issue with my '03.
Just bought the same part from Jaguar Merriam Parts (the Kansas dealer listed earlier) for 107.50 shipped. Should get in a couple days. If any issues, I'll let you know.

Yes the nipple is in a place that people tend to lean on when working on the engine. It does not take much force to crack it.

Default Cooant tank repair kit?

Airsept makes a product called the permatube. It is used to replace the
plastic coolant overflow nipple on the radiator beneath the cap. I used this kit to repair the broken plastic nipple on my Jeep Cherokee years ago and it worked remarkably well, just wondering if rather than replace the entire tank this device may do the trick.

Keep in mind that some automotive plastic tanks are far better than others and may lend themselves more easily to repairs. As fragile as these Jaguar plastic tanks tend to get as the years go by, I would just bite the bullet and replace rather than attempt to repair....

We got rid of this car a few months ago...replaced that coolant tank, a few months later had to replace the hoses as well. It had an oil leak and tranny was leaking too. AC stopped blowing cold completely. All before the car hit 75k miles. Good looking car, but man, what a pain.

No question that these cars do indeed have their issues that must be resolved sooner or later. The ones you experienced are all known problems. Your oil leak was probably the oil pan gasket. Your ATF leak was probably the ZF electrical connector sleeve. Your HVAC issue was probably a failing compressor....

Sorry it didn't work out for you. I fully understand, though....

Speaking of recurring issues on these, anything I should pay special attention to? I'm not sure of the service records on mine, and want to try to nip any issues in the bud before they become major wallet-drainers.

Yes, but it won't have Brembos and probably not self-levelling headlights.

See the HowTos about IMT.

Reading this thread appears to be back luck for me. It appears that the water pump on my 04 STR has sprung a leak! I started smelling coolant about a week ago, and the water level was fine. Then a couple of days ago I opened the header tank and the coolant was low. I topped it off. Searched for leaks, nothing. This morning I started seeing drops of coolant coming out of the bottom front of the engine. Further inspection, I see the coolant coming out along the front of the engine by the oil filter.
I checked the lines/fitting around the super charger, and they are dry. This leaves only one item in the front middle of the engine. THE WATER PUMP!

Grumble, Grumble Grumble....

That's interesting as not many STR's have had water pump leaks yet??

Howe many miles on your 2004? Have you changed coolant at all? Any other hoses?

On my 2005 STR I have had several pin hole leaks in hoses on the front of the engine which were hard to figure out where the leak was. With the inter-cooler there are a bunch of hoses on the front of the engine.

Just check closely so you don't have to go back in there again!

This was TtwoTees, 2004 STR. It had a new long block installed in 2011 at around 75K miles. As far as I can tell, all the hoses were replaced about 2 years ago. I don't know if he put a new water pump on the engine when it was installed, or if he used the original. I will look asap at all the records he gave me. (The infamous rear inter-cooler hose leak did his original engine in)

There is so much crap around the front of the engine, that I can't see very far down below the supercharger pulley. I removed enough plastic parts to be able to see the water pump. Doesn't look like it is leaking out the bottom.
I am wondering where the coolant is coming from, because I don't see anyplace else around the front of the engine where it is coming from?

Help!

The only way I could find my leaks was wait until the engine was cold and then use a pressure tester on the cooling system. Like you said it very hard to see where it's coming from.
