Removing 2001 s-type battery
Hey guys, after not starting my 2001 for a good week, I found my car battery dead. Or so I think so. All I was getting was a clicking sound, and all the gauges do a sweep from left to right when I turn the ignition. I tried to jump start it, only to find that I don't have a proper ground. (Supposedly I can't put the negative jumper clamp on the negative terminal according to the manual). So after much debate and failure to get the car started, I try to jump it the normal way putting the negative clamp on the terminal just to get this car started. No success. So I decided, why not remove the battery and have it checked at a local auto store.... I disconnect the negative, positive, and the bar support over the battery, yet the battery doesn't want to come out. I realized there is yet another rod on the side of the battery I have to unscrew. I tried to unscrew it, but I just couldn't get it undone. Can someone tell me how to remove this battery? Also inspecting the battery and the underside of the car, it seems every thing is bolted straight down into the underside of the car.

my s-type battery is in the boot near the spare i'm surprised that you are having trouble removing it as it is a pretty clean area, be careful that when replacing that it is of similar or same profile as there is little clearance between the battery and the floor that covers it.
the only indication I had that our battery was getting on as that the computer driven equipment went crazy, lights came on blinkers did weird things, thought the car was nuts, rang the dealer and he said lower than expected voltage, rather than cranking amps will do it every time, i.e one cellis marginal and all other cells are ok.

ok I got the battery out. Its an 01 so all the screws and nuts were rusted out under the car. I called up my local Jag dealership for battery prices. They said no matter make or model jag, its gonna 150 plus tax. The battery is authentic with a 5 year warranty. I wonder what other choices I may have. I did visit the local pepboys, which is offering a BOSCH battery for 100 with a 3 year warranty. Choices choices. Anyone know what I should do?

No mention is made here of the alarm going off when disconnecting the battery!!!!
Removing the battery is never an issue- there are nuts and bolts and straps, and the battery terminal clamps to undo and remove. What can cause an issue is the sounding of the alarm when the circuit is disruppted by removing the terminal clamp on either of the two battery terminals.
For example, in a Porsche Boxster 2002 that I previously owned, you need to have the ignition turned to the ON position before disconnecting the leads to the battery terminals- this stops the alarm going off: disarms it or puts it in SERVICE mode.
What same procedure is there for an S-Type V6 3.0ltr of 2003 model?

Thanks for that. The alarm goes off even with the key out of ignition, when battery terminal is removed.
The back EMF no longer applies in the modern electronic designs as protection is built into the design. The example given for Porsche, the battery terminal is removed whilst the ignition is on and just short of starting the engine! However, it is good practice not to remove power when there is circuit activity such as the woken up ignition circuitry by inserting the key.
There must be a protocol for removing the battery terminal in Jaguar (S Type, or all models) to disarm the alarm.

I changed my battery out the week I got the car. 15 years was long enough. Before you re-install your new battery, you should remove any rust on the brackets, and on the bolts holding the cables to the side of the trunk and paints them. Ford colors match up easily and you are only painting a few bolts. Jaguar quote of 150 is accurate. I got mine at Walmart and it was 145. It think it is the biggest battery on the shelves. NEXT. After you install your battery, you might take a tip from the marine folks. Get a $6 can of CRC terminal coating and spray the terminals after you hook it all up. My battery came with terminal covers and that adds more protection. Finally, it is ESSENTIAL that you correctly hook up the fresh air tube that takes out fumes if it needs to.
