Help for a Novice Please
In need of help. I have very limited mechanic experience. My borther is usually my mechanic, but he is not very fimilar with Jaguars, I think he is intmidated! My CEL came on as well as occassionally "Cruise Not Available", although the cruise still works. The car is running beautifully. I bought is used a few weeks ago, so I do not know the maintainence history, but it appears to have been very well taken care of. I had the codes read and cleaerd, P1000, P0430, P0171, and P0174. I was told by the garage (specialists in import cars) that CEL are common in imports and as long as the car is running well not to worry about it. So far, the light has not come back on, but I am concerned. Any suggestions on what I can check to ensure I am not doing damage to my babe by continuing to drive it? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P1000 sould be ignored. P0430 is catalytic converter system efficiency below threshold – bank 2. P0171 is bank 1 combustion too lean. P0174 is bank 2 combustion too lean.
Based on last two there was a vacuum leak as for P0430 could have been a bad O2 sensor. If none of the codes came back then you have nothing to worry about but if any of them came back you should get it fixed.

Debbie, what part of PA are you in? It is looking like a bunch of us are going to be meeting near a members house outside of Hellertown, PA. I would be willing ot give the car a once over and point out a few things to you. Looking like we will be meeting on Saturday (10/25) most likely around say noon or so. Can't garantee a miracle, but I am sure I can figure out something to make things better.

Thanks Thermo! I live in Lock Haven PA, Central PA. Thank you so much for the offer. I would love to meet other members and also have the chance for you to look over my babe and share your knowledge. I have read your posts and you are very knowledgable. I have to work on Saturday so I can not make it this weekend. There are not alot of experienced Jag mechanics in my area and I would like to learn to be more self sufficient when it comes to maintainence and just to be more knowlegable about the interworkings of my Jag. This forum is an awesome tool and I am very happy to be a member.

When you look at doing maintenance on the X-Type tell your brother "don't think 'Jaguar', think 'Ford'" and you will (mostly) be OK. At least, that's what I'm learning.
This weekend I pulled the intake manifold to change spark plugs and move around the coil packs to track down a misfire. Initially I was cursing the Brit engineers who laid out the engine compartment but by the end I was thinking "no problem - I could tear it down again in 15 minutes if I needed to".
And, BTW, four of 6 plugs were oil fouled so I think I've got a valve cover gasket job in my near future. Unless this was a side-effect of the massive vacuum leak from the totally rotted crankcase breather tube. Either way, I can handle this in my own drive. All I have to do is remind myself: "Ford".

Hi, I was hoping maybe someone here could offer a few ideas for me and my mechanic. I have a P0430 code that won't go away. I originally had multiple misfire codes along with P0420 and P0430 codes after replacing the upper and lower intake gaskets all except the P0420 and P0430 codes went away so I replaced the cats with oem direct fit converters. The P0420 code went away but the P0430 code remained. So the Oxygen Sensors were replaced that corresponded to the P0430 code. Still can't shake the P0430 code. Ideas?
Thanks

kyle, you may need to add some spacers for the downstream O2 sensors. I forget the proper name for them. But, it pulls the sensor a little bit out of the main exhaust stream and this seems to fix a lot of issues like you are seeing. They are like $20 as I recall for a pair of spacers. If you do some looking on the Forums, you will see a few references to them and I think you will even find a few links to where you can purchase the spacers.

Kyle: The spacers Thermo refers to are also called Oxygen or O2 sensor extenders, adapters and bungs. The thread size M18 X 1.5 fits our X-Types.
Here's an example: O2 Oxygen Sensor Test Pipe Extension Extender Spacer M18 x 1 5 2 Bung | eBay
If you're uncertain where to locate the two downstream sensors, this thread will help:

You'll need a special socket with a slot for the sensor's wires. Major auto part stores often lend them out for a small deposit. A picture of the socket is in this thread:
