Default RE: steering column

I think the tele issue is a cable, I've heard they wear out. But I don't know how big an issue it is to replace it.

The loose wheel is a column bushing (made of plastic, I think)that apparently wears out the day after the factory warranty expires. Every X300 I know of has that issue. I guess you could try knocking both jobs out at the same time. Probably won't be easy though.

I just had my XJR inspected and one of the concerns that came up was the loose steering wheel. I was not happy when I thought might be the entire steering column that needed replaced. I'll have it checked out when I bring it in for repairs next week and see if it's only the column bushing.

I just replaced my steering reach motor drive cable. It took me a couple of hours and involved removing most of the driver's dashboard followed by the steering column, as my hands weren't nimble enough to replace it in-situ. You'll also need a big 12V PSU and an ohm-meter to test/re-calibrate the potentiometer on the end of the motor. Even so, you'll still probably want to turn auto-entry/exit off to save damaging it again, especially as the replacement cable is much stronger and more likely to cause the motor to burn out than give way like the old one did.

I got mine off ebay for $45.

Is there a thread on the procedure for replacing the cable? I did a search:
"+steering +wheel" and read all that came up. Didn't see how this is accomplished. Didn't see it in the stickies either, but sometimes I'm blind.
TIA.

I was just recently gifted a 95 xj6 (6/14/14) and my tilt worked for a little while, but the telescoping feature all you heard was the motor run and no movement at all. Now all I hear is relay clicks when the switch is moved in the desired direction for the telescope. While trying to adjust tilt, the motor runs but the column does not move.

I assume this would be the same issue, but I'm curious if there is more then one motor for these combined features? I realize this is an old thread but thought maybe this issue has become more prevalent over time.

Thanks in advance, Drew

There is just the one motor and if you hear the motor running with no "telescopic" action, it is most likely the little drive shaft that has gone kaput. I replaced mine some time back ad posted some pics of the procedure/assembly. I didn't have to remove any of the dashboard, just the under scuttle, dropped the steering column, which is easily removed if needed and the motor just clips in place.

Search my posts and you should find it.

Actually there are separate motors for the reach and the tilt functions. See here

Thanks everyone! Again sorry for beating up an old thread but I did a search and found this exact issue. I will keep everyone posted on what I find out.

OOps and apologies. Slight senior moment there. I was thinking about the fact that there is only one motor for telescopic action, as opposed to the one for tilt. Must renew my medication!

It happens to the best of us, no worries! I'm sure you were just addressing the issue with the telescope feature, when in fact, sadly neither funtion is working at this time. I have yet to look through those other posts to see the R&R procedure as well as parts required for the job. Just like many of you out there probably don't like to tackle a job without having atleast some knowledge of the task at hand. Thanks for the help!

I'll be watching this.

I just discovered that my telescoping works but my up and down tilt doesn't.
