Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) R&I
Hello
I noticed a posting requesting instructions on how to remove a Oxygen Sensor into another thread.
I created 2 PDF files:
Heated Oxygen Sensors RH (the first one) comes from the Electronic Controls section of the 98 XJ model selection in the JTIS. The same instructions apply to the LH one:
XJ Heated Oxygen Sensor RH R&I.pdf
The Front Muffler (the second one) is included here because the Heated Oxygen Sensors instructions refers to it as prequisite to removing the sensor:
XJ Front Muffler R&I.pdf
I am also including the XJ Exhaust system PDF as a overview of the entire system:

Also here is the weblink to forum member XJRJeff thread that has the photos of the CATs:
Good day to change an engine
Here is XJRJeff response to the request for instructions on exhaust removal (that is posted in another thread):
Your going to want to remove the intermediate muffler in the middle underneath the car.
I would call it the cross pipe, both pipes go into one muffler in the middle of the car. Loosen the 4 clamps on that section and your going to have to do some good tugging.
Your going to want to remove the two rear connections first and then pull the whole intermediate section off the cats.
The cats can be removed from the engine bay with 4 bolts. You may have to remove some heat sheilding to get to the bolts first.
You may decide that you can get to the sensors after you remove the intermdiate muffler. It does provide quite a bit of room once it is out of the way.
I am going to attach a link to my post about my 99 VDP. If you scroll to the bottom of the posts you will see I have a post with some pictures of the exhaust system. Hope this is helpful.

Yes, step 3 says to remove the muffler although I'm positive you don't need to in order to remove all 4 sensors.
I'm positive you don't because I can see that you can get to at least one if not three without removing the muffler.
Maybe you need to remove the windshield, yes, no?
