knocking when cold from engine
Hi, any advice please?
I have a 2001 xjr the engine is strong still pulls like a train uses no oil or fluids no smoke even on hard kick down in fact runs superb! However, when it's been stood for a day or more when I start it up there's a quiet knocking coming from the engine. This noise remains for about 60 seconds but gets quieter and quieter until it disappears entirely, almost as if it's taking too long for the oil to circulate? I have very little mechanical knowledge but I know this is the better steel lined engine so praying it's not a tensioners issue?

Another thing to look for is oil pressure. Even as worthless as the dash gauge is if it doesn't come to mid range in 2-3 seconds you probably have installed an oil filter without a check valve.

+1 on this.
A proper oil filter with a check valve would be the second thing I would check, right after the tensionsers.
But since you say it is a knock, not a rattle, I am guessing it is oil pressure related and a cheap oil filter without the proper anti-drain valve is probably the problem.
If you have a $5 "Fram" filter, take it off and throw in the nearest trash can and replace with a good one.
I use NAPA Gold filters, they are about $15 and they have all the proper parts.
