Hi,
I've read through all the various threads on using clay bars, and think I am ready to attempt it, but I have a few of questions that hopefully you can help with...

1. Obviously I need to wash the car down first. I don't have a jet-hose (it broke a few weeks back). What should I use to wash it with? Is it best to go with something like Autoglym shampoo or similar rather than a wash and wax? What is recommended? Do I need any specialist paint cleaners too?

2. After the claying is done, the other threads state the next step is to polish. What do I use here? I tend to currently use Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine after a normal wash, is this ok or should there be a stronger base?

3. Aftre the polish it states wax? Should this be again something like Autoglym Extra Gloss protection or something else?

Sorry for a barrage, but just don't want my clay efforts to go to waste, as it's unlikely it will be done again any time soon. I am open to any brands, (preferably cheaper ones ), I have no particular affection to Autoglym it's just I've used it for a long time and been happy with the results, but now want to take it a bit further. Finally, it's a metallic black (PEF...midnight blue) x-type, don't know if that makes any difference.

It really all depends how bad the marring is on your paint. You always want to go for the least aggressive approach that will get you the results you want.

 

Thanks for the response, I'm just looking for the correct order really and any polish recommendations and if what I'm using (i.e. the Autoglym Ultra Deep) is the right way to go.

 

Hey there, I'm NOT an authority on detailing by any means, but as its a black car you might want to try "Poorboys Black hole"......Its a glaze if i remember correctly and has an element of fillers too I believe.

All I know is that after you're done the car gleams and the smell is awesome too.....Its not all that expensive either.

Hopefully Dave and some of the other detailing gurus will chime in and offer the professioal advice.

The Autoglym products you have should be fine after the detailer's clay process

 

Bumble, hopefully this will help you out......

For washing thoroughly pre soak, then using a grout sponge and a ph balanced automotive soap clean the vehicle from the top to bottom leaving the lowers and wheel well arches for last. Autoglym Shampoo will do, I just recommend a 2 bucket wash method, 1 with soap and 1 with water

INSPECT INSPECT INSPECT paint work

Clay using plenty of clay lube or quick detailer to avoid inducing scratches. After it is best to polish using a D/A for optimum results....if by hand see if your Autoglym product is compatable.

At this point you can either use an AIO (All in one) product or go with a 2 step process.

After the polishing I would recommend a paste wax or sealant for the LSP (Last step protectant) followed by an application of Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection as a final topper...

As you have probably read, I choose to use the Meguiar's system....look into the M205 and M21 combo......you will bet awesome results!
