Default Chrome restoration

Hello everyone,
Some of the chrome trimming on my 2004 XJ8 is becoming dull and weathered. Does any one have a miracle product that can bring the Chrome Trimming back to it's original luster. I tried a product called Flitz, a metal, plastic, and fiberglass polish. It brought some shine back but didn't remove the sections that were weathered. I just wanted to know if there is anything better.

Hi Darryl. I tried good old Brasso metal polish and as you say it only brought back a bit of shine. So I would also be interested in any miracle product. However, being naturally suspicious I suspect that a re-chrome or new parts are the only answer.

Acutually I just talked to Ken@britishparts.com about the weathered chrome around our S Type windows. He advised that there is really no product that he knows of to bring back that showroom shine. He recommended having a professonal detailer bring back the shine.
But if there is an over the counter product I too would love to know about it.

I use Simichrome polish from Germany, imported by: Competition Chemicals, Inc., Iowa Falls, Iowa 50126. Google it then you should find one. Great result.

EZfan i looked at numerous reviews on this product, Simichrome polish and they are all very good. I have to tell you that the flitz polish was very good but the reviews on this Simichrome polish were numerous and all positive. On one site over 200 reviews saying things like it's the best polish in the world. One guy restored the chrome on a 1986 motor cycle with this product. That Bike had to be weathered. Bottom line, I am going to try it and see if it can meet my expectations. Thanks my friend.

I'm back with the 411.
Flitz and Simichrome are both exceptional products. If you need to clean and polish Chrome, which is the metal I used these products on, they are very good.

I got a mirror reflection of myself on the front grill on my XJ8. They remove rust, grease, and grime. They even clean the edges of the metal.

I used Flitz to clean the paint and fiberglass surfaces on my car. The Simichrome might be too abrasive to use on anything other than a metal surface.

I don't know and didn't test it to see. Now the disappointment. They did not totally remove the weathering. They improved the metal surface but did not totally remove the weathered look. On a scale from one to ten, as far as taking away the metal weathering the Flitz was a 5, and the Simichrome was a 6.

I found these products locally, at a Hardware Store. A tube of Flitz including taxes is about $7, a tube of Simichrome is about $12. I hope this helps.

Nice review Darryl. I think my pipes are too weathered to really benefit from any more polish.

I tried a lot of different products to bring back the weathered chrome. They helped only a little. Then I remembered as a kid we used coke to remove rust on chrome. I put coke on it and it cleared up the weathered marks.

FYI-The window trim on my car (2008 XJ) appears to be plastic chrome, just like the grill. Check the material before you decide which route to take.
