Here is the latest and final update on our claim against Jaguar Cars for our 2008 Jaguar XJ Sovereign 2.7 TDVI Diesel with a broken crankshaft.
After a long drawn out exchange of rude and arrogant letters from the Jaguar Main dealerships solicitors and by standing up for our rights under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 we have finally won our claim and received a payment of £7500, this was more than we expected so we are very happy with the result.
The strange thing is that after speaking to a Jaguar specialist about repairing our engine they felt that the main dealer could have done the job like we asked for less.

A lot of pain but well done!

About $10000 I suppose.

Is this a common fault with the XJ 2.7 as that was the model i'd set my mind on ?

It's not uncommon. Since the petrol versions are pretty well bulletproof, and so much nicer to drive, you might want to consider one of those.
If running costs are your concern, buy a 3.0 litre petrol model; the overall fuel consumption is much the same as the 2.7 diesel, it's far more refined, quicker, infinitely more reliable, and less expensive to service.

Yeah mpg was or is a big factor due to the reason why I'm getting a Jag, as I'm no longer working & I'm using most of my savings to buy it, so after I've got it money will be a bit tighter or I'd buy an XJR & some of the things on my bucket list along with the Jag is traveling so at times I will doing a fair bit of distance, but probably 95% will be short journeys round Oxfordshire, which after reading about the 2.7 isn't the best environment for it, so I'll have to have a rethink, but if I'm going down the petrol route it'll more than likely be a 4.2.

To all Harbinger's of doom. The XJ is back with a new lowrider stance, had the crankshaft replaced and the 2.7 TDVI engine rebuilt, its now had its first 500 mile service and is running well. Thanks for those that supported me.

@jiffy1111
Just found this thread, normally only look at the F-Type part. I own a Landrover Discovery with the same engine. My car is fine, but its a well documented occurence. This is from a LR service bulletin :

Title Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Concerns - TDv6 Diesel Engine
Category Engine
Last modified 06-May-2014 00:00:00
Symptom 499000 Basic Engine

Content
Issue:
Crankshaft/crankshaft bearing failure - TDv6 Diesel Engine.
Cause:
Low incidence of crankshaft failure are being encountered, caused mainly by incorrect location of the main bearing shells during assembly, or through rotation of the shells during normal use. A new procedure has been implemented to ensure:
- more rapid resolution of customer concerns, and
- greater visibility of failure modes in order to improve repair process and parts delivery.

Action:
For any suspected crankshaft/bearing failure, please contact your local Dealer Technical Supportor FRED team for details of the enhanced customer handling procedure.
The list below summarises typical symptoms of crankshaft/bearing failure, but please contact your DTS/FRED team if in any doubt as they will be pleased to offer assistance:
· Crankshaft is seized, engine cannot be turned either via starter motor or crankshaft pulley bolt.
· Oil sump or engine cylinder block is holed, with oil leakage and/or metallic debris found on engine under-tray.
· Engine makes a loud €˜rumbling/knocking €™ sound when running which worsens as the engine is placed under load. The engine oil pressure warning light may flash or be continuously illuminated, especially at low engine speeds.
