Default Dash Pad Cover

I am looking to replace my 70 Series II dash pad. I have found offerings on Moss and SNG Barratt, with significant difference in price and precious little description to assuage my suspicion. The SNG offering states that their $217 pad fits all E types of my year, including the 2+2. Moss offers one for roadsters and coupes for $300 and another for Series 2 LWB (long wheel base - 2+2?) for $200.

So, will the SNG fit my roadster? Am I misunderstanding the LWB application for which Moss offers a different pad?

Assuming the SNG pad will fit, I would buy that one.

UNLESS someone here has another suggestion? E.g., I don't know yet the condition of my foam, but if it were healthy, has anyone simply recovered with vinyl and or leather?

Thanks!

Default dash pad

You are correct in assuming that LWB, long wheel base is the 2+2.

I would do a chat with Jeremy or William at SNG and ask your questions... also ask what their policy is to return something like this IF it doesn't fit. I had to send some light bulbs back, but that wasn't pricey postage.

I doubt you could recover the foam. At this age it is crumbly, powdery yellow dust. If you did recover it, the dash vents may not fit over the new thickness. Here is a 'trim cover"

Additional thoughts:

The main difference between the dash pad (also known as the instrument panel) in a Series 2 Jaguar coupe and a Series 2 Jaguar 2+2 is the overall length and shape. The 2+2 model, introduced in 1966, had a lengthened wheelbase to accommodate rear passengers, which also affected the design of the dash pad. The dash pad in the 2+2 model would be slightly longer and wider to accommodate the increased interior space.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Coupe (FHC): The coupe's dash pad is designed for a two-seater configuration.
2+2: The 2+2 model, with its lengthened wheelbase, requires a longer dash pad to accommodate the increased interior space and accommodate the rear seats.

Valerie,
.From what I can see in the pics of replacement units, they do not have precut holes for the vents. None of the installation videos address that nor do they show much about releasing and reattaching the vent tubes. I'll have plenty of time to take it apart while doing the floor pans and removing the interior.

BTW, got another, more reasonable, paint quote, assuming I do trim removal. Gotta find some videos on that; definitely high risk given the expense of those parts if I break them.

You can indeed just recover the dash pad. The new vinyl is thin enough that it can simply go over the top of what you already have. Removing the old covering won't be possible as it'll be held on with contact adhesive and removal will tear the old foam to pieces.
kind regards
Marek

Thanks Marek,

That's exactly what I was hoping.. Not only that, I'm thinking of doing, and using RED leather or vinyl to match my new interior. The car is never going to be "correct", so why not?

Default A caution

It will take some skill to completely glue new vinyl over the old. One risks having areas where the glue coverage looks OK at application, but then turns out not to have been, and lifts. Especially with your FL heat.
Also do be aware that red is a color that is horribly affected by UV light, exposure to sun will turn it pink. Just check out formerly red kayaks that were outside. Just sayin'

I don't see myself as a skilled artisan, though just today I applied PPF to my new Tesla front facade, and it came out pretty well. I am sure you are right; and I am not dead set on rewrapping the dash, let alone in red. And I hadn't even considered the fading aspect, however Armorall is standard issue here.

My big challenge will be the floor pan replacement. I am studying up on cutting and reattachment methods; I think I am going to purchase a welder.

In the meantime I can't find any definitive information or "hacks" on lifting the car. I am hoping I can find a way to use the lift I have.

Regards,
Pete
