Recently I have been noticing that while driving the handbrake/Brake fluid light flashes on and off while driving. The handbrake is not engaged and the brake fluid level is good. Of course the brakes work just fine. Any suggestions where to check for a loose wire or any other places to check.

 

First common cause are the float/s in the brake fluid reservoirs. If these no longer float they will cause the warning light to come on. They are easy to check visually or by pressing down the metal pin at the top of the reservoir. Second common cause is the handbrake warning light switch. If pressing down on the handbrake lever causes the light to go out then it may need adjustment. That's a bit more work.

 

The brake light goes out when the handbrake is disengaged. I will try the floats. If the floats what is the fix?

 

To confirm that it is not the handbrake switch, press down on the handbrake while driving to see whether that stops the light flashing.
If it is the reservoir floats sinking, complete assemblies can be purchased from the usual suppliers or you can replace the floats with a wine bottle cork which will last about 15 years in my experience.

 

Ditto on the wine bottle cork. It is not necessary to get a good Ozzie Shiraz, but that is a side benefit of the fix.

 

After going through the wine cork routine to replace the no longer buoyant float, my blinking light returned. Finally, I disassembled the screw-on cap and found the small disc and contacts inside totally corroded. After cleaning and reassembly the problem finally went away.
