Question Jaguar E-Type, Problems? Things to Look For? Any Help Appreciated!

Hi all! I'm trying to find out about any common problems the Series I E-Type's had and anything to look for.

I know next to nothing about E-Type's but have always wanted one ever since I first saw one as a child. Now I finally have the means to get one. I want a Series I E-Type preferably with a manual transmission but not necessary. My budget is around 60-80k. So I'm going with a coupe because my budget won't allow a roadster. I'm looking for a good condition car but one that I can get in and drive. So not a concours car but not a project either.

Anyways is there any common problems with these? Anything to look for when I'm looking at one? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

The #1 issue is body rust. The #2 issue is shoddy repairs of #1

As far as mechanicals go, the E-type is dirt simple by today's standards. The only serious consideration I can think of is clutch condition...as replacement is an 'engine out' affair.

E-types were known for cooling problems and brake system problems....but there are lots of known fixes and repairs are generally well within the realm of a decent DIYer with a bit of experience.

Body/paint/leather/trim work is where the serious money is.

Others will chime in

Cheers
DD

Thanks! That seems to go with what I have heard. I'm not new to vintage cars but I am to Jaguar's and E-Type's.

Hi,
Doug pretty nailed the issues. I've owned mine for 40+ years and am a hands-on type. You are never too old to learn and with the help of Jag forum members can find your way. I would suggest, gathering the typical tune-up and wrenching tools and keeping looking. There is one now at "http://bringatrailer.com/auctions/" . Might check it out......This is one of my favorite.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

If you don't work on them yourself, , it's a serious affair. Electrics...a black hole. Replacing just the window washing spritzer on my Series II is a grand.....I stopped there. So, I have a beautiful 69 roadster for 79K.
