Evidently the '70 was the only year that used a three-wire courtesy light switch in the driver door....These switches are obsolete, and virtually impossible to find...
Here's what I discovered...Only one of the wires seems to have a function....The purple/white controls the courtesy lamp...The other two wires do not even show on the wiring diagrams for the Series two car...
I also found that some Jeep Wrangler switches , fit the '70 E- Jag drivers-door "bump" perfectly, but only uses one wire (grounds to frame)..This works fine...
The big question is....What the h#$$ are the other two wires for?...One is hot at all times, the other is not a ground, and is not hot at all times.
I dont know if this will help. Some time ago I'd found a 1970 wiring diagram on the net, printed it up and tacked it to the wall. Here is a close up of the door wiring.
I haven't removed the door cards so don't know what's behind there.
Thank you for your efforts
...I do have that diagram...Notice that it only shows the PW wire, not the other two, even though there are three wires plus the ground....The switch is in the jam, below the "A" pillar...Mine has a "dome" riveted to the jam, then the switch inserted into that...
The Jeep switch works fine, but it only uses the one PW wire....I can't find any info on the other two....I wonder if there was a door alarm on cars with this switch????

My (newly acquired) 1970 OTS apparently has one of these switches. It doesn't appear in the parts diagrams or parts lists. Can you post a photo of your switch?
Here are photos of both switches. The right hand one is the small one; it is listed and shown in the parts catalog. The larger (black) one is the left side, and is not shown or listed in the parts book.
Thank you for your efforts

Hello Edward,
Its likely that its a door alarm when the ignition is on. I haven't come across an S2 so equipped, but it is definitely an option on S3 cars. However, the door switch it totally different on an S3; its assembled into the door hinge. A 1970 S2 is close enough to early S3 production, that it was available in late S2 cars and carried into S3 production.
Its shown in S3 Wiring Schematics, with the Door Alarm Switch ANDED with the ignition switch. The noise of the alarm buzzer provides ample motivation to close the door.
If you can get to the two locations where these wires connect to the switch, check for continuance across the two points with a Multi-meter when the switch is in the door open position. Accordingly, if yes, then its really only one extra control wire.
In the S3 circuit, there is
1. 12VDC being supplied to one side of the Door Buzzer directly from a Fuse Block
2. a wire from the ignition switch to one side of the Door Buzzer Switch
3. a wire from the Door Buzzer Switch to the Door Buzzer
4. a wire from the Switch to the Map Light
The wires in 2 and 3 above show continuance when the switch is in the door open state.
The wire in 4 above shows continuance to Ground when the switch is in the door open state.
According to SNG, the driver-side door switch was only available, and used , on some '70's models, and cannot be obtained.....It's a plastic piece of crap, anyway , IMHO.
I have absolutely no use for a door alarm, so the Jeep switch works perfectly, and looks pretty much the same.
