Default PVC System on Series 2. 4.2 Question

Still going over my engine bay trying to learn all that is there complicated by the air conditioning, power steering and PVC system. Looking at the service manual I might have a later PVC set up as on the 12 cylinder. First picture are the metal lines/tubes from the carburetors to the breather housing with screen at the top front end of the engine connected to the valve/camshaft covers. On the opposite side of this breather housing there is a single metal pipe/ tube running down behind the battery to a metal canister.

What does this canister do and does it require maintenance? I cannot see anything running into this canister from the other side but something might be there.

Finally found a page explaining the canister. The gas tank is not vented by way of a hole in the gas cap so as the gasoline in the tank expands due to heat any vapor travels by way of a pipe to the canister where it then travels to the breather at the front of the engine and then to the carburetors.
