Series 2 Starter Motor
First post in the E Type forum, I'm a visiter from the X350 forum, so be gentle with me.....I've posted this on the UK forum too, but no one has admitted to changing a starter yet !
I have just bought what appears to be a solid S2, that has had a fair bit of love and attention lavished upon it in the 2 years it has made it back to the UK from the states.
I have one immediate problem, which is a lazy starter motor....it's painfully slow, and I'm more surprised when it fires the car. The previous owner, who assumed this was a battery issue has put a new battery on it. The wiring all seems ok.
The starter looks to be one of the few things that hasn't had any attention, so I would like to remove it, and at leat check the brushes etc but probably renew it.
I'm happy with a set of spanners, and previously have had other older Jags etc but I thought I would seek the advice of anyone who has done this job....as once I'm halfway through, I'm probably committed, with a stationary car.
The factory manual makes it look relatively easy .... aside from the removal of the distributor. I haven't yet had the carpet out to see how easy it is in the "transmission tunnel" inspection hole. It's a manual LHD car if that makes any difference.
Also I am wondering if a high torque starter is the way to go ? and if so, anyone been there ?
I don't have access to a 4 poster lift....but just wondering if I did would the starter come out of the bottom quite easily (If so I may take the easy route and pay someone).....alternatively, if I remove the airbag & vacuum tank is there room for it to come out there.
At least it's a manual, and I have a rope, and a jeep !
Thank you

Hi,
I've "been there done this" on my '67. It is a PITA, However, it's simply a matter of gaining access. Yes the distributor, the vac tank, the gravel pans, air cleaner. Then it's a wiggle job. I would definitely go back in with a small version. if available. The factory starters are big and bulky. This aside, insure all of the attachment terminals are clean first.
Good Luck .....
