Stromberg adjusting for altitude

Stromberg adjusting for altitude
Bought a '69 E-Type fr collector in Fla, and found runs really rich since now car is now at 6000ft altitude in CO.
Shop says carbs are unadjustable, and in order to run it lean they would need to switch parts out to a TR-6 or some model which can be adjusted.
If the EPA wanted them unadjustable, it contributes more carbon. Seems ***-backward to me....Correct?
I hate disturbing something working and intact. Should I have the shop mess with them (at more expense) or leave the carbs as is...they run great but are pretty smelly.
Thanks Guys.
