Default wheel spokes leak

I have a 4 year old Dayton wheel that has developed leaks at several spokes. I must have hit a bump although I did not notice anything severe occurring. GE silicone, windshield adhesive and urethane have been suggested as effective sealing materials. Does anyone have experience and/or recommendations?

I agree with Malcolm, have always used inner tubes and have had E types since 1972.

Default How about rim bands?

I have always had rim bands put on when I changed out tires, as well as used inner tubes. No issues in the 33 years that I have owned the car.

Moss sells rim bands in various sizes: here is for 15":

Continental used to sell rim bands, but all I could find was bands for bicycle tires. The rim bands protect the tubes from any spoke ends piercing the tubes. Some owners use Duct Tape over the spoke ends or some sort of sealant in a tube. I've found that duct tape often loses its adhesive and with sealant in a tube, how can you be sure that all surface is covered?

Thanks for your input. I too used tubed tires since the car was new (I am the original owner). I really needed to replace the originals and went with Daytons and have been happy until recently. They have wheel belts but also a row of spokes that connect near the outer wheel edge. Those spokes are sealed separately and 3 have leaks that I treated with silicone. So far so good. I guess I will see how the one wheel lasts before deciding what, if anything, to do to the rest.

we have seen too many failures over the years. I am amazed they still make them. i think it is a major worry.

Does anyone know if Dayton have a tech support service to advise on repairs to the sealing material? BTW - I use old school rim bands and inner tubes also.

I've run Dayton rims for thirty years with no tubes. You can also balance them without special cones. They've never been a problem. Try calling Dayton: 1-800-862-6000

Thanks for the Dayton phone number. Called and got good assistance. As they suggested, I will try 3M windshield sealer. If that does not prove reliable, tubes will be in the future. I still have the originals but after 54 years, they might be questionable.

why not just fit inner tubes, that is after all what they are there for.

I shan't mention any wheel brand names but every time we rang wheel manufacturers and complained about failed tubeless wire wheels they said they had never heard of that problem before. That happened every time. No matter how many times we made the complaint it was always the first they had heard of it.

Now we refuse to fit wire wheels without inner tubes.

"Slap a bit of window sealer in it" Blimey is that the way you want your wheels? It isn't really a proper engineering solution, which is why Borrani refuse to do it.

https://www.borrani.com/tubeless-wire-wheels.wire

The reason is because people want to buy cheap wrong size tyres, because you are not supposed to fit inner tubes in tyres of less than 70% profile.
