I am thinking of painting the powdercoated wheels on my 98 xk8. They are stained and have some permanent marks that won't come off. I've been looking at the Duplicolor website. Does anyone have any experience doing this? I checked on getting them re-powdercoated and it's pretty pricey. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

 

Hey there, if you wanna do them yourself I've posted a couple of links for you. Its really not that difficult. The first set I did were ok ( not enough preparation ) but still looked great. The 2nd and 3rd set were just as good as new.
The key, before you start to paint is preparation......sand, sand, sand and then sand some more. Always 2 or 3 light covering coats rather than trying one super heavy coat, and followed by 2-3 coats of lacquer.
You could easily do them in a weekend, they'll look great, you'll get lots of satisfaction and even with buying the products you'll be around £200+ better off

Thanks for the links Jim..I swapped out the spare rim for my worst on the car rim. Spare had never been on the car. I'll start with the worst and work my way forward. Again thanks.

 

I did this on my stock 16" wheels. Its not that hard at all but I would go with VHT wheel paint. I used the duplicolor wheel paint and the metallic makes it look dull and ashy. This might have been an operator error but I found that the best way was to apply a few coats of the wheel paint (which would look really dull) and then to apply a few thick coats of clear wheel paint. Thick coats will make it glossier and give it a wet look. I havent used the VHT but I'm assuming its better.

 

I recently had scratches professionally repaired on 3 aluminum wheels, and the paint color was custom mixed (black metallic paint and aluminum paint) to match the factory finish. Then the wheels received a clear coat--all spraying done with an airbrush. An individual should be able to use special wheel paint and a clear coat to paint all four wheels as long as there are no bad scratches. Scratch removal is a different subject, since the scratches will need ground down and a self etching primer applied prior to applying paint and clearcoat.

New car dealers in larger retail markets will have a wheel repairmen come by weekly to service their retail customers and their used car departments @ approximately $75 per wheel. If someone doesn't wish to tackle this job, I suggest they contact their local dealer to see if the service is available.

 

ive done several sets of wheels with duplicolor and no issues other than clear over black. that and the time to sand and clean

 

Where are you at. Powder coatering prices seem to vary a lot. I use a coater near Ephrata at work a bunch and the price is great. I would suspect in the 75 range per wheel including prep.

 

I opted to use the duplicolor system. I used epoxy puddy to fill any curb rash, sanded and prepped and painted. I used the spare as my test dummy.

I do paint the rims on my other cars.. like was mention. sanding and sanding its the most important.. after using the lower grit sand paper.. change to a higher number sand paper to smooth out the sanding mark done by the first sanding ( if still want to make is smoother go up one more higher number sand paper grit)
after all clean and shine (you need to clean the wheel of any dust, i used a paint thinner or you can use any brake cleaner spray)
then used a primer (if you go with duplicolor, they have a product called adhesion promoter)

i have seen people use a lacquer or clear coats..
