Default Rear Brake Pad - renewal

The only complication is first deactivating the Electric Park Brake. My pads were more than 50% worn so I took 25ml of brake fluid out of the reservoir using a turkey baster to allow for the excess fluid when the caliper pistons were pushed back.

The EPB procedure is carried out with the vehicle in PARK or NEUTRAL and the ignition turned ON. The engine must be OFF:

1. Press and hold the parking brake switch in the RELEASE position
2. Wait one second
3. Press and hold the accelerator pedal in the wide open throttle position
4. Wait one second
5. Set the ignition OFF and back ON immediately

The EPB actuators on the calipers can be heard moving and the message Park brake in maintenance mode is displayed on the Instrument Cluster.

Leave the SMARTKEY in the vehicle or the ignition will automatically go OFF in approximately 10 minutes ...... and the EPB will actuate.

The wear sensor is on the RH inner pad and, provided the warning has not been activated, can be re-used. Having previously had problems with the wear sensor on my XK, I cautiously removed the RH caliper and supported it on an axle stand so I could examine the F-Pace wear sensor connector.

The angled black piece (arrowed in red) is NOT a connector. It is the rear of the sensor. I released the harness from the bracket (arrowed in green) which allowed sufficient space to slide the sensor sideways out of the pad. There is a small 'U' shaped spring which holds the sensor in place that needs to be re-used.

The new pads and caliper can be re-installed before fitting the wear sensor. With the 'U' shaped spring fitted on the sensor, it easily pushes into the recess in the inner pad and locks in place.

Reactivating the EPB is the reverse of the deactivation procedure:

1. Press and hold the parking brake switch in the APPLY position
2. Wait one second
3. Press and hold the accelerator pedal in the wide open throttle position
4. Wait one second
5. Set the ignition OFF and back ON immediately

The EPB actuators on the calipers can be heard moving and the pads are brought into contact with the brake disc.

Just did a full front and rear brake job this summer (rotors and pads all 'round) and the EPB maintenance mode procedure you describe worked flawlessly. I didn't heed keeping the key fob inside or worry about the electricals shutting down. EPB maintenance mode remained engaged until reversed.

BTW - The amount of rust showing up on so many parts under the F-Pace is disgraceful. JLR really were cheap not using galvanized bolts and metal fittings on these newer "premium" vehicles. There is surface rust everywhere. Shameful. And makes for a good argument to get the underneath rust-sprayed annually.

The maintenance mode is a great improvement on earlier models with EPB's.

I'm used to rusting Jaguars in England and am relieved they now last longer than they did in the 60's and 70's but agree the F-Pace should have better protection. Too much reliance on plastic undertrays instead of higher quality finish and anti-rust treatment.

Welcome to the forums Loc123,

There's two questions that appear across our forums more than any other:

1. best oil?
2. best brake pads?

In both cases every brand available has it supporters and detractors but you will be no nearer a definitive answer by reading every single post on the topics.

Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some information about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

The only one to avoid is getting them from your local Jaguar Dealer. I use genuine Jaguar parts on my vehicles but never get brake pads or discs (rotors) from them - the markup is outrageous.

That being said, when I changed the rear pads on my F-Pace, a Land Rover Dealer was listing the correct OEM pads on ebay at less than half list price so that is what I used. I found the same situation when my XK needed front pads and discs.

Wherever you choose to look, the P/N's (Part Numbers) will help identify OE or equivalent aftermarket.

Thanks for all the help. I think I will go with genuine Jaguar parts because I want the braking to be “universal” same feel as front and rear if I only change front pads/rotors.

is there a good place to buy OEM parts online?

also what is the specs on rotor thickness?

Here's the thickness and torque specs:

For parts sources, I'd start with a Google search on 'Jaguar Brake pad + P/N' using the P/N's I put in post #7.

This guy gives a pretty good description only difference is he torques the caliper bolts to 70Nm +120 deg, I expect the 110Nm in the table is equivalent and he tosses the wear sensor as a matter of course.

Are these kits(pads and discs) any good for a daily driver?

I see Rock Auto does not carry OEM Parts.

What can we expect? After all, they're using "ultrasonically welded" together, 2 piece plastic coolant pipes, aren't they?

I can vouch for the rears, I used those on mine last week. The first side took a couple of hours the second was much faster, engaging and disengaging maintenance
mode took several attempts but worked out in the end.
Living in AZ is an advantage none of that nasty rust stuff to deal with.

Price was $182 for parts dealer wanted $1262 to do it.
