Doesn't our in-car navigation system contain all the maps for a given large region...which is why we need to update them? (You might need internet for THAT)
Yes you are correct. The JLR navigation system does NOT need a cellular connection to function as a mapping device. The maps for a given region are stored on (and updated to) the internal hard drive and the unit receives location information via the GPS satellite network using a simple antenna to receive the signals (passive RX system, no TX needed). Map updates are about 12GB in size and are done via download, through JLR's In-Control website, to a USB stick through a PC (at least on my MY18). However, features outside of the basic roadway maps (i.e. real-time traffic, real-time POI searches (there is a POI database in the map set but it is fixed and only as up-to-date as the most recent map updates), satellite image maps (like Google maps satellite view), etc.) DO require a cellular connection.
My inquiry was asking if the extra features requiring the cellular connection were being done via the embedded JLR SIM or the user SIM (found in the slot in the center console). My icon in the upper corner of the display always shows 3G in my MY18 (March 2017 build), but I don't know if this is a vehicle limitation or a SIM card limitation.

The extra features use your user SIM, not the embedded one. My MY18 shows 4G as that's the SIM I have, I suspect your SIM is a 3G one and it's not the hardware that's the limiting factor. In the UK we have Giffgaff, which runs on the O2 network and they'll give you a SIM that you can then register and buy "Goodybags" that determine how much data you get a month. You can cancel or change the goodybag every month if you need more or less data, or let it auto-renew, so not a huge commitment.

Good to know. I'll have to see about getting it swapped out.
My 2016 model doesn’t have a user SIM. I added a CarPlay unit so I can use Apple Maps with traffic information coming in through my phone. I do have InControl active for remote unlocking etc and my understanding from talking to my dealer tech is that this is driven through a hardwired Sim in the telematics unit.

I’m paying AT&T $20/mo for 4G in the XE. It came with something like 3 months free, and I decided to sign up after that. FreedomPop is a bit cheaper, don’t know about others.
Just got this from Jaguar today, affects my 2017 F-Type. So apparently as previously discussed, no option is available. You're just out!
For cars affected by this that are still under the base 5/60 warranty (at least in the USA), Jaguar is required to replace the equipment if possible to restore service. This excerpt is from the legalese of the InControl Terms & Conditions from JLR's website (emphasis added):
13.6 In the event of a discontinuation or change of necessary telecommunications systems and services (e.g., if the Network Provider sunsets, terminates or restricts wireless services of the type used by the InControl Services and/or your Vehicle), you are solely responsible for replacing, as well as for the cost of replacing, any equipment that is necessitated as a result of such change or discontinuation, except if such change occurs during your Vehicle’s base warranty period, we will, at our sole option, either: (i) obtain substitute and reasonably equivalent network coverage compatible with the existing InControl Package in your Vehicle; or (ii) install, remove or replace any equipment that is necessitated to make the InControl Package in your Vehicle compatible with then-available network technology unless neither option (i) nor (ii) is possible on commercially reasonable terms. In such event, you will be solely responsible for contracting for a Data Plan for your Vehicle upon the completion by us of either (i) or (ii) above.
I would argue bridging to 2G is not 'reasonably equivalent' to 3G.
Does anyone know where the module(s) that need replaced are located? I would consider getting mine replaced if they don't have to rip apart too much of the car.
I believe it is (at least in the US) the Telematics module which in the coupe is in the cubby behind and between the two seats. I wonder if it is possible to put in a module from a scrapped car and have it configured to the car as a "cheap fix".
I guess another "feature" bites the dust for us like much of the OEM infotainment features that just quietly vanished.
I hope remote start and lock stay with us. Status is nice and cute too...
JLR should do what Porsche did and come up with a "blessed" new tech option for carplay...I went third party but doing something that is officially sanctioned is all they need to do. Frankly, carplay is great. 1k for the unit. An hour of labor...done. They have a double din unit too....the porsche tax is shown here too....but this approach is what is needed and likely would fit across the line since their radios/units seem to be similar. I think it would really make a lot of people happy. They could even go in with another company if they wanted to spread out costs.. .but LR units alone would cover things probably.
Here is the idea to copy:
