Default 911 guy

I have always considered myself a 911 guy. From its inception in 1964 [as a 9 yo], I was all-in. I spent a great deal of time at my local Porsche dealer during my formative years admiring the latest offerings from Stuttgart, particularity the "S's," but all things Porsche were royal.

My first 911 was a pristine low-millage 3.2 '88 coupe in Grand Prix White with black leather interior, a car many still believe is the epitome of what the 911 was meant to be. It was a truly wonderful car. Several years later, I was lucky enough to find another very low millage 911, this time a coveted 993 C2S, a '98 [the last year of the air-cooled engine]. It was Arctic Silver/full gray leather interior, Aerokit 2 [looked like a Turbo S], lowered, all the goodies. It was a beautiful car and a serious head-turner in its day.

I now drive a 2018 F Type coupe and I can truly say although I never thought I would enjoy a vehicle more than my last 911, this car ["only" a base (with VAP tune and working on VAP lowering springs] has turned this 911 guy into a F Type guy. I know that a GT3 or GT2RS might be off the charts in terms of absolute performance, but this F Type is what a 911 can never be...absolutely gorgeous inside and out, and does what I believe a 911 could never quite achieve...create nearly 100% synthesis between driver and automobile.

I would be interested in hearing from other "911 guys" who are now driving F Types and how they have perceived the transition.

I have owned about 20 +/-Porsches including my last 4 (Boxster S - Tuned, 911 Turbo-Tuned etc., GT3 - modded, and Cayenne S)...And many 911's Boxsters, Cayennes, and even some 944 Cabriolet's. Added an F-Type R AWD and did about ~$16K in upgrades, and I think it is great. It is a beautiful design, and drives great, with an awesome sound. Lots of fun to drive, and lots of compliments as well. I think it was a great addition to my fleet, and really does hold up in many ways to the Porsche's (I did not say it is a Porsche but it can hang with them).

Default 911 Guy Too

We are on the same wave length! I have a 2010 911 Cabriolet and 2018 F Type Coupe, love both of them. It's hard to decide which one to drive every day.

Funny, the other day at a gas station a guy asked if my car was a Porsche.

So I guess they are interchangeable.

Had a 997 GT2. Great car. I regret getting rid of it. Now I’m in a RWD Ftype R. Seriously love this car. First and only Jaguar and honestly was never into Jaguars.

Not in the UK, Jaguars are treated with respect, Porsches not so much (mainly because of the 80s bankers!).

The small mountain town where I live is a frequent destination for car clubs on weekends. They congregate in town when they stop for lunch or whatever before getting back on the highway. It is not uncommon to see a few dozen Porsches, Corvettes, or even Ferraris in town on a weekend. And a lot of motorcycles, not the outlaw gangs but the full dress tourers or the road racer types.
Anyway, a few weekends ago the Porsche owners were in town and I was at the gas station with my 2021 F Type R. A Porsche owner was parked across the street and was getting into his car and yelled across to me "I like your Jag". I complimented his car as well. Nice to get respect like that from other enthusiasts.

I have been able to see several of the new model Corvettes first hand, and while they are great performers they even look worse in person in my opinion. The Jaguar ? No comparison in styling and classic appeal.

Like many on the forum, I've had multiple Porsche/Jag's over the years. Both are fine cars!

911:
+ The superior driver's car. (All the more so if you go up the food chain to Turbo/GT3, etc.)
+ More support structure for 3rd party adder's and repair shops because of the volume.
+ Holds early life value better.
- Bigger investment in purchase, insurance, and potentially on repairs (YMMV).

Jag:
+ F-Type is a thing of beauty.
+ F-Type is more fun to drive.
- All the +'s for the 911.

Also: (You can decide whether they're + or -)
With a 911, you probably won't get noticed by the general public.
No one is going to ask you what it is.
Only on occasion will someone pay a complement (I got 3 yesterday on two stops running errands).
Rarely will you get an amused "Do you want to trade?" offer.
It won't make anyone smile.

Overall:
On a road course, I'm borrowing my son's GT3,
Around town & beach, he's borrowing my F-Type (or maybe the e-Type).

I have owned a handful of 911s, a Cayman GTS, and a Boxster S. I personally think it's a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison. The 991.2 is surgical and precise, the F-Type is an unchained, rabid (overweight) beast.

When I decided that I could afford to buy a car that cost as much as my first house purely for the fun of ownership, I thought of a Porsche 911 first. I had always admired them. But then I went on their website and started building the car of my dreams, with some options and upgrades but not going totally crazy. I was up above $150,000 very quickly and I thought when the heck did Porsches get so expensive ?

As my use for the car was going to be more of a true Gran Turismo than a track car, I started researching the F Type which seemed like a good choice. I started out thinking the V6 would do it for me, but by the time I added all the options that were standard on the R Model, they weren't that far apart in price. Plus I knew if I went with the top of the line I would never regret not having a V8.

My dentists is a car guy and has a GT3. When he saw my F Type he said it was absolutely beautiful.

So you made him look a bit down in the mouth?

Looks to be I am the poor man in the group but I had 2 911's; one an 01 TT and the other a 2011 997.2. The turbo was modded a bit and not much on the 2011 other than an intake but both were very precise with cornering and handling. Both were very quick as well. The F Type is, as someone mentioned, apples and oranges. It is loud, heavy, and more of a muscle car than sports car. I love my F Type R but will be adding another Porsche next year when prices level out.

When I was shopping for a Cayman, I discovered that a fully loaded configuration had more cost in options than the price of the base car.

Several responders mention the weight of the F-Type V8.....just one reason why the V6S is considered by many to be the better choice. Anyone who thinks the V6S has insufficient power must live where there are no speed limits and no traffic issues.🙂

I agree. My V6 [with V/ap tune @416hp] is plenty fast and does not seem heavy at all. I just put on a set of Yokohama Advan Apex v601's which really flattened the feel of the car, but how much power do you need? To me [of course, I am 66 now], to have a car this beautiful on the outside and so much nicer than a 911 on the inside means much more than whether I can do 0-60mph in under 3 seconds. After all, soon you'll be able to buy a golf cart full of batteries that will probably do a sub 1.0 second. Who cares? Speed is only part of the equation.

A truly great car is like a truly incredible woman. Although absolutely beautiful to look at, it's how she makes you feel that makes her a keeper.

Putting the V6S on a diet and the engine on vitamins certainly eliminates any sense of heaviness.
