After selling the Range Rover and daily driving the F-Type for a while, i realized i have to get a new daily driver.
I always liked big sedans and big engines, so the CLS 63 AMG seemed the best choice. Picked up a 2012 with 24k miles. They come with the standard 517HP or the Performance PKG one with 557 HP, with me picking the base.
While i know they are two completely different cars, i wanted to compare them in terms of power and build quality.
- Although the CLS is praised for it's loud exhaust, it sounds like a Buick compared to the F.
- Having 517HP, it's not a slow car, but it's nowhere close as lively and agile as the F. The tranny on the CLS is always shifting to higher gear, even in S+ mode, and takes a few moments to get going due to constant low rpm.
- One supercharger seems much better that 2 turbos.
For the pluses of the CLS:
- Stellar A/C and sound system. Two of my big complaints on the F.
- Great ride quality at all speeds, especially for spirited hwy driving.
What was it about the f type that put you off it as a daily driver? Needed a back seat?
Couple of days a week i have to drive 100+ miles, with a lot of stop and the F was not comfortable enough for me. It's not a GT car, so i can't fault it for it.
For my taste it's definitely a weekend car, best enjoyed on good weather and clear traffic.
There are a lot of people that do use their F's as daily drivers though.
Congrats. I'm not a big fan of MB styling in general, but I really like the CLS. CLS and SLS are probably the 2 MB I'd would get. I agree that for DD and commuting, a car with more comfy seats, interior space and amenities is the way to go if it's in your budget. I mean in the F-Type you can't really recline your seat much if you are stuck in traffic and want to lean back for a rest :-)

Working with cars, I've been privileged to drive a lot of great cars. I can honestly say that, from a comfort and reliability point of view, nothing compares to MB's.

I couldn't disagree more. Power train refinement and ride yes, reliability, quality control, durability of interior parts and trim, no way, not in my experience. Mercedes will never get another dollar from me.

On interior, you should take another look at the "new-gen" MB interiors coming on each "new-gen" model. I think they are now the "gold-standard" of the industry. They now put Audi and BMW to shame.
When my wife was buying, we compared the new-gen (2015) C-Class to a new '15 E-Class sitting right next to it on the showroom, and the C was in an entirely different league. At the time, the new-gen E hadn't shipped. No one was buying the E at that time, because the C was so much nicer.
The CLS63 would be my car if they had had the right interior in stock. I couldn't find a good color combo. When I found the XF-RS it was an instant deal. Both are great cars. I see a lot of CLS63's in my neighborhood but have yet to see another RS in town.
Perhaps the next toy will be MB...
