Out of curiosity, did your door frame have the little tab? Did the growler lights fit as is or did you have to modify anything?
I just fitted the type with the Leaper. My doors had the tab, but the lights went in anyway. I had to put them in at a very shallow angle, but they did fit.
I had some leaper versions I got off Amazon. After 3 months they yellowed and became increasingly dim. In the end, they cheapened the appeal of the car and I swapped them for the same white leds that match the ones I put in the footwells. Much cleaner.

The lights themselves did not have any kind of notch cut out of the housing. I don't know if the hole in the door card was a perfect rectangle or not - I put them in blind while sitting on the seat. They seemed to go in easily, just went wire/bulb end first.
Well, I finally got round to fitting mine - and they don't fit in the orifice. The "bulge" around the projectors is too wide to fit the aperture in the door. Comparing to the OEMs they should fit, but the bulge is just too big. And doesn't the OEM bulb get hot in the time it takes to unplug it!

UHH yes I burned myself the first time, and then someone helpfully suggested turning off all the (non ambient) interior lights by pressing and holding the central overhead light.
If the lights themselves are the same dimensions as OEM, try putting it in at an angle?

The overall dimesions are the same as OEM, but the OEMs consist of just the "front" glass and the bulb, the new ones have a bulky section with the projectors. I tried all sorts of angles without success. I may have a go at trimming down the sides of the projector section to narrow it down a bit - but not sure how much "spare" plastic there is to play with.
By the way, has anyone replaced the other interior lights (three dome lights above and the cargo lights in the trunk)? I believe they're LEDs but they're not very bright and I wouldn't might matching them with what I put into the footwells. Just wanted to know if there were any tips on getting into those housings before I monkey around

Yes and no.
Years ago I pulled the console down out of the roof to see if and how the globes could be replaced.
I can't remember exactly how I did it but it was bound to involve some levering with plastic trim removal tools and/or screwdrivers.
Anyway, once out I could not for the life of me find a way to get at the globes from either the front or back sides, it is a sealed unit!
And yes they are LEDs not halogens.
I was also thinking of installing these headlights on my MY2016. I even ordered these headlights. They were in my garage. After reading all the reviews, I changed my mind. I did not even know that these headlights do not fit, and I might have problems. It seemed to me that there should be no problems, but I was wrong. Sometimes I am so glad that I am a subscriber of this forum. You guys warn me against mistakes. Now I ordered new ones from vont.com and installed them. Everything fit and works without problems. Of course, I read the reviews first. So guys, sometimes it's good to read reviews.
