Default BlackVue Dashcam

Following a couple of near misses over the past couple of weeks with people pulling out of junctions in front of me - I am thinking of installing a dashcam

Has anyone got experience of the entry level BlackVue DR450? Looking for a simple low cost solution in case of accidents, don't need it to run while the car is switched off.

You should really check out this thread I posted, you can actually get the 650 2ch for just a little bit more than the 450 1ch.

Thanks will check it out - the 450 is just over $100 and the cheapest I have seen the 650 for is $370 so quite a big delta - so want to know if the 450 is adequate for an accident cam or do I need to step up to the 650?

The differences between the two are:

Camera
450- CMOS sensor (Approx. 2.0 M Pixels)
650- CMOS Sensor (Approx. 2.1 M Pixel)

Angle of View
450- Diagonal 118°, Horizontal 97°, Vertical 53°
650- Diagonal 129°, Horizontal 103°, Vertical 77°

WiFi
450- N/A
650- Built-in (802.11 b/g/n (2.4~2.4835 GHz))

GPS
450- External (Optional)
650- Built-in

So to answer your question, as far as the image quality and recording go, the 450 is absolutely fine. BUT, with the 650 you do get the GPS/speed feature which can help you in the event an accident or ticket as well as the 2nd camera pointed at the rear which comes in handy if someone hits you from behind when you're parked/driving, or scratches your car or trys to steal the leaper off the wing... Also, with the link I provided you would get the two camera 650 for $260, which is a steal, but it is a good amount more than the $100 for the 450.

Either way they're both very good dash cams.

I use Mobius camera in mine, its about as small as you can get for an HD camera and fits out of sight behind the mirror

From all the windshield F type pictures I saw first you have to make sure that horizontally oriented camera will fit on it without obstructing your view and/or looking ugly. I have an older blackvue 600 and it didn't fit anywhere. So did H50 from Thinkware. There is simply no room behind the rear view mirror, and it did not look good anywhere else under the dot matrix area of a screen...

I ended up purchasing vertically oriented Viofo A119. Placed it in the dot area, with only the lens sticking out from under it.

Have to disagree with you there. I have a 600 in mine, and I've fitted to the side of the rear view mirror (left side for me as mine is UK). Fits perfectly and you can't even see it from behind the wheel, it's about 90% obscured by rear mirror and doesn't detract from visibility at all.

Ok it's not absolutely central but we're talking maybe 3 inches off to the side, which makes zero difference to the view.

When I said it didn't fit anywhere what I meant is it didn't fit anywhere without being an eyesore for me personally. I'm 6'2" and sit quite far from the steering wheel, so the mirror didn't cover it for me. YMMV.

Im 6'3 and have the seat about as far back and low as it will go.

I have the Blackbue 650, and its hidden to the left and behind the rearview mirror. I can see maybe 5% of the bottom of it, if I look for it, but it certainly doesnt get in the way.

I have found its excellent quality and has already saved me an insurance case when a bus crashed into the rear of me, then tried to blame me!

If you do buy it, you also want to get the powermagic power pack as well, this lets you use the parking mode/runs the camera when the engine is off, without completely draining the battery.

Very good dash cam, I must say it is little bit expensive, i always recommend garmin dash cams if they are on low budget. But people with good budget like you, instead of going with blackvue dash cam you should go with thinkware X500D dash cam.

I ended going up with the 650S 2CH. Despite taking it to a professional installer they weren't able to get the rear view secured to anything unfortunately - I have a convertible.

Front cam is excellent quality.

You might as well set up a second camera to record in cabin or to the left/right side.
